Squat Program Success+Week in Meals

Hello! I wanted to first talk about my squat program: the rundown of what I did+the progress I made. Then, we’ll go through some meals from this week. First, a quick Monday highlight: my parents, friend, and I went to a San Jose Giants (Giants’ A affiliate) to see Bumgarner pitch a rehab start, and it was a blast!

IMG_4440 IMG_4431

We got watermelon wheat beers and barbecue—chicken sandwich+coleslaw for me!

IMG_4430 IMG_4432

It was so much fun! I love baseball. Bumgarner did super well (1 UER), much better than last week’s start which was 9 runs in 4 innings…

IMG_4437

I finished the night with chocolate vanilla swirl froyo with sprinkles.

IMG_4438

Now, onto my squat program!

Here’s what I did, first. Listed as reps, then percentages at those reps, and then what weight I used.

1: 10-10-8 @ 70-75-80%, 135-145-155#

2. 8-8-6 @ 75-80-85%, 145-155-165#

3. 6-6-4 @ 80-85-90%, 155-165-175#

4. 4-4-2 @ 85-90-95%, 165-175-185#

I did a day of squatting with Crossfit (just whatever was programmed) plus one additional day of the above rep scheme a week. 1=week 1, 2=week 2, etc. Each week, I was building weight while decreasing reps. At the beginning of my program, at Crossfit we did max reps at 95%, which was 185# for me. I got 3, with the 3rd being a failed fail (I tried to fail but then got it up). Well, when I did the last day of my squat program last week, I shocked by how not terribly my 2 reps at 185# came up. Then, at Crossfit on Monday I had to do max reps at 185# again, but this time I got 7. What?? That’s such a big increase over the course of a month! This squat program has been a lot of fun, and seeing strength increases like that makes it even more worthwhile. I’m planning on doing another cycle of the same thing, but with 5# higher each week.

And then, as promised, I have lots of food to share! Pop back in tomorrow for a new Quick and Easy recipe as well!

Breakfasts

IMG_4326

Leftover red, white, and blue banana bread with milk and a nectarine post-workout, pre-work.

IMG_4351

Flapjacked muffin with delicious nectarine. CA summer at its finest.

IMG_4401

Microwave banana custard with a dab of sunbutter. I literally have not had this in years, but I was craving something protein-rich for breakfast so I went for it. Yum!

Lunches

IMG_4230

Nectarine, grilled chicken, and creamy goat cheese salad with a side of GF crackers.

IMG_4328

Grilled chicken, blueberry, and burrata salad with rice cakes.

IMG_4338

Date and nectarine salad with goat cheese, light champagne vinaigrette, and a side of BBQ rice cakes.

IMG_4355

Same thing, but with white nectarine instead of yellow!

IMG_4410

Catered Mexican food at my dad’s company picnic. I made a salad out of lettuce with fajita chicken, black beans, salsa, rice, tons of guac, and a tortilla.

Snacks

IMG_4235

Brown rice cake with creamy goat cheese and raspberry jam.

IMG_4329

A new to me NuGo bar. The pomegranate was actually crazy good! It was a little more interesting than just chocolate (below), but that one was good too. IMG_4339

I like these bars because they’re coated in chocolate, so naturally they’re delicious.

IMG_4428

The usual.

IMG_4228

I’m liking this new work smoothie: 2/3c milk, half a flapjacked vanilla smoothie mix, 1/2c frozen mango. Loving the vanilla mango flavor combo!

IMG_0643

This morning I did a treadmill workout followed by a yoga class. I did a half mile warm up, then 8 rounds of 2 min push at 7:00 pace, 1 minute recover. I only had Cheerios beforehand, so I set myself up in Starbucks with an iced decaf latte and a snack to work on stuff for school, and this blog!

Dinners

IMG_4233

A delicious summer dinner: leftover chicken with BBQ sauce, sautéed zucchini noodles seasoned with a sundried tomato seasoning blend, and an artichoke served with a mayo-balsamic vinaigrette dipping sauce.

IMG_4330

Post-yoga Wednesday night, I suggested we just pop into Whole Foods for dinner. I had an enchilada over salad, plus some rice and some grilled veggies.

IMG_4356

A lazy Friday night dinner at home: takeout from the counter with more zucchini noodles. My mom and I split my signature custom burger: chicken with garlic aoili, gruyere (they messed up and put goat cheese instead), tomato, mixed greens, and of course, avocado, on a GF bun.

Desserts

IMG_4234

Chocolate chip orange cranberry bread with chocolate Halo Top.

IMG_4331

Flax brownies (actually really tasty) with vanilla Halo Top, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

IMG_4349

And finally: my beer! I finally tried my chocolate milk stout that I brewed and it is absolutely amazing. REALLY amazing. Possibly better than the St. Louis version, possibly one of the best beers I’ve ever had. I am very impressed and surprised with myself!

Have a great week!

Monterey Beer Festival Weekend

Hello, hello! I hope everyone is having a fantastic Monday thus far. I wanted to share my weekend adventures: The Monterey Beer Festival! This was my birthday gift from my sister, so Saturday my whole family drove down to Monterey to drink some beer!

I started my morning with a Luna bar, nectarine, and 8am spin class.

IMG_4359

After getting my workout in, I had a bag of rice cakes before hitting the road!

IMG_4360

It took us a little over 2 hours to get to Monterey, with a fair bit of traffic.

Naturally, we dove right in for a sample as soon as we got there.

IMG_4361

^Figueroa Mountain’s lager. One of the best of the day!

And then it was time for food! My mom and I split a corn on the cob and a chicken taco platter.

IMG_4364 IMG_4366

IMG_4412

IMG_4414

Then, it was time for beer! This festival was crazy crowded, and a lot of the lines were SUPER long.

IMG_4367

(I realize Monterey is spelled wrong but I can’t edit snapchat, whoops!)

IMG_4368

^Black lager!

After spending a whole lot of time waiting, we decided to just go for the shorter lines and skip the bigger ones (or any with only IPA). There were all sorts of things; everything from IPA to lager to stout to cider to apricot wheat to ginger beer.

IMG_4369 IMG_4373

^Raspberry ginger beer

IMG_4380

IMG_4374 IMG_4375

^Fav of the day: Dustbowl Vanilla Blonde Ale!

IMG_4376

^Good lager, but even better because they had a pup!

IMG_4377 IMG_4378

It was a fun day! They had a live band, which was fun! I will say though that it was super crowded, and a lot of places ran out of beer, some within the first hour. But the weather was beautiful, and the beer was (mostly) flowing, so who am I to complain?

IMG_4416

We basically closed the place at 4:30 (an hour before the technical end) and then checked into our Air BnB to nap (at least I did) before heading downtown for dinner.

I was super hungry by dinnertime thanks to most of my calorie consumption for the day being beer. I split a salad with my mom, and then had roasted chicken with roasted potatoes and green beans.

IMG_4383

My dad ordered some ice cream for dessert, which we naturally stole bites of: chocolate, passionfruit, and maple bacon.

IMG_4384

Sunday morning, we slept in and then my sister, her fiancé, and I went for a short run pre-brunch.

IMG_4386

I think we were all more than ready for food by our 11am brunch reservation. I shared a warm goat cheese, beet, and mango salad.

IMG_4389

And for my main course, I got an absolutely delicious creamy polenta, poached egg, and queso fresco dish.

IMG_4390

Naturally we had to stop at one of the many fruit and veggie stands on the way home. Avocados, 10 for $1? Sign me up! (They were small, but still!)

IMG_4391

Road trip snacks:

IMG_4392

Pre-dinner snacks:

IMG_4393 IMG_4394

I wasn’t crazy hungry for dinner, so I just had a massive artichoke and a sweet potato stuffed with cheese.

IMG_4395

Dessert was birthday cake Halo Top with a flax brownie.

IMG_4396

After dinner, I had to run into work for half an hour to do a treatment on a kitty (I volunteered), and then after, we made toaster oven s’mores with gf graham cracker.

IMG_4400

It was a fun weekend! And I cannot believe it, but this is my last week of work at the vet!

Red, White, and Blue Everything (4th of July)

I know we’re a few days out from 4th of July now, but I swear I haven’t had a minute to recap my 4th of July! It was a pretty relaxing day, with emphasis on red, white, an blue!

Of course, my morning started with a Crossfit workout.

IMG_4308

We did a simple but longer workout, with the option of having a partner and splitting it up:

50 squats

400m run

50 push ups

400m run

50 pull ups

400m run

50 wall balls

I chose to do it alone…and started regretting that decision during the pull-ups! Honestly though, my pull ups need so work, so builds character?

19702387_10155469242044813_7217438016878373861_n

After a sweaty workout, I relaxed on the coach with sparkling water and a mid-morning baseball game. Perfect way to spend a holiday!

IMG_4309

On the way home from my workout, I picked up some food for the day, including apparently bad goat cheese. I was going to have some for lunch, but it was rotten. What the heck?? It wasn’t past the expiration date!

For an early, light lunch, I had a single serve bag of rice cakes (current obsession) and a salad with peach and burrata.

IMG_4310 IMG_4311

After the game, i spent a few hours relaxing with a book and a kitty, which was fantastic.

IMG_4312

Then, mid-afternoon, I went to a BBQ with some of my high school friends.

IMG_4313

I got to play with my friend’s puppy, drink beer and eat delicious food, and lose a water balloon toss.

I came in time for the dinner I envisioned earlier in the day: red, white, and blue salad!

IMG_4315

I’m already obsessed with Blueberry Burrata Salad, so I figured why not throw some raspberries in and make it patriotic? This salad would also have been delicious with goat cheese in place of burrata.

We also had grilled corn, because #summer.

IMG_4316

Of course, I also had to make red, white, and blue banana bread. It’s just my basic banana bread recipe, but with white chocolate chips, raspberries, and blueberries stirred in. It’s also possibly the most delicious banana bread variation I make.

IMG_4314 IMG_4317

IMG_4319

For fireworks, we weren’t feeling too ambitious, so we walked to the top of our street with Chloe to where we could see the whole Bay, and were able to see a couple of different fireworks displays from there.

Here’s the obligatory blurry fireworks picture:

IMG_4325

It was a nice low-key holiday!

Pre-4th of July

Happy 4th of July! I hope everyone is out having a blast, or enjoying some quiet time beforehand. I’m blogging in front of baseball, and wanted to share a day of eating from yesterday,  July 3rd!

Breakfast: maple blueberry bread and strawberries I picked up in Davis, plus a beautiful nectarine!

IMG_4286

Since I didn’t run on Sunday, I wanted to fit in some miles yesterday. Since I had some time on my hands, I went to my favorite running trail.

IMG_4288

I went at a bit of a speedier pace than my normal casual run, and my achilles felt actually amazing.

IMG_4290

Post-run, I made a quick stop at home for Chloe and then took her for a walk.

IMG_4293

I learned on this walk that Chloe does not appreciate being honked at by a goose. It was sort of hilarious though.

When I got home from our walk, I made a quick but delicious lunch. I tried a new salad combo that came out amazing! I used guacamole as my salad dressing, then spread a leftover turkey patty with creamy goat cheese, and topped everything with ketchup. Yum! Plus a couple of leftover roasted sweet potatoes.

IMG_4294

After lunch, my family and I went to a movie, which I thought was a mixed bag. During the movie, I snacked on a bar.

IMG_4295

That evening, I went to Crossfit and then raced home to shower before having dinner with some friends. My friend was ambitious and made mushroom risotto! I brought beer and heavy cream (the missing ingredient).

IMG_4296 IMG_4297

On the side we had bread, corn, and a beautiful salad with egg, avocado, corn, tomato, and goat cheese.

IMG_4298 IMG_4303

I enjoyed time with my friends, and with kitties and the pup.

IMG_4301 IMG_4302 IMG_4304 IMG_4306

And now I’m off to enjoy my day. Have a good one my friends!

Weekend+Weekly Workouts

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! Tomorrow is 4th of July, and that’s crazy to me because I feel like the summer has flown by so far! Today we’re going to do a little weekend recap and then go over the week’s workouts!

Friday I didn’t have work, but I had a lot of errands to run. I made a big smoothie with banana, cocoa, chocolate protein, and milk for breakfast, and then took Chloe for a little walk.

IMG_4236 IMG_4237

I had an early lunch at home of a salad with maple/miso/garlic salad dressing, grilled chicken, and soft goat cheese. I recently got soft and creamy goat cheese from trader joes, and I love it!

IMG_4238

The first stop was to buy scrubs, which was more complicated than I was hoping because my favorite scrub top was discontinued. I had to try on a million pairs of scrubs! Next, I visited IKEA to look at bedroom furniture. My last several stops took me to a shopping center.

IMG_4249

^iced peach tea

After getting everything I needed, I actually stopped in for a SoulCycle class since I was down right next to one. Another SoulCycle opened up closer to me, but I refuse to go to that location out of principle, because it is literally right next to my favorite locally owned studio. RIGHT next to.

The class was fun, but SoulCycle still is not something I would recommend to everyone (unlike normal cycling classes, which I suggest everyone try!)

After class, I met my parents for dinner at True Food Kitchen. I had heard of this place, and was excited to see one had opened up! We started with torched avocado and cucumber noodle salad.

IMG_4250

And beer for me.

IMG_4252

For my meal, I got the seasonal salad with chicken, which had roasted cauliflower, chickpeas, roast broccolini, asparagus, raisins, and manchego.

IMG_4253

Also delicious was my mom’s spaghetti squash!

IMG_4254

For dessert, we shared a few things, but I ate most of this flourless chocolate cake with caramel sauce and ice cream.

IMG_4255

Saturday, I had work as per usual.

IMG_4272

For lunch, I packed a goat cheese, chicken, and nectarine salad with a side of microwaved sweet potato dipped in ketchup. It was fun to mix up my carb source from my usual crackers!

IMG_4257

My parents met me with Chloe downtown after work and we tried a wine bar that served small plates style food. I skipped the wine because I had to go back into work later that evening for a treatment, but I enjoyed my food! My mom and I split a lemon poppyseed salad with goat cheese, and my main plate was a delicious ratatouille.

IMG_4259 IMG_4260

Since dinner was on the lighter side, of course I had to big a big cup of froyo. I had chocolate and blueberry, and a tiny bit of cake batter, with chocolate sauce and chocolate covered raisins.

IMG_4263

We ate our yogurt outside, and there were a couple of dogs out there. Chloe was sitting right next to this pretty golden and she honestly couldn’t have cared less!

IMG_4265

After I got home from work round 2, I popped open a bottle of this dark beer and watched the replay of the baseball game from earlier that day.

IMG_4273

Sunday morning, I was up BRIGHT and early. I actually made the drive to Sacramento to volunteer at a spay and neuter clinic for feral kitties with my future classmates! Every month, vet students go to a local shelter and help spay and neuter anywhere from 60-90 feral cats, which are then released. This helps keep the feral cat population from exponentially increasing. As an incoming first year with limited knowledge, I was a little nervous, but everyone was super nice and helpful, and I learned and practiced some new clinical skills. It was such a cool experience, and I had a blast!

IMG_4284

^My beautiful stethoscope.

On the way home, I stopped for gas at the gas station near where I’m going to be living (soon!) because there is an amazing produce stand attached. The prices cannot be beat, and the produce is so fresh and beautiful! I got 6 ears of corn for $2, and peaches were 79 cents a pound.

IMG_4279

I got all that for $11! It’s a TON of food too!

My two hour drive back flew by thanks to both my road trip playlist (made for my road trip to Chicago for playoff baseball last fall!) and a phone call with a  good friend from college! We’ve been trying to Skype for a couple of weeks now, so I figured, hey, I’m stuck here for 2 hours, might as well chat for a bit!

When I arrived home, my family did a beer flight from our final box of beer of the month club.

IMG_4280

This was a good one! More summery than past shipments (no dark beer or stout). We had an IPA, a lager, and 2 red ales that were very different from each other. My favorite was the Gypsy Lager. I love a good lager int he summer!

For dinner, we had grilled burgers (mine was turkey served bunless), roasted broccoli, and roasted sweet potatoes. Of course with lots of ketchup.

IMG_4282

For dessert, I had a piece of cranberry orange bread with chocolate chips form the freezer. I am slowly but surely getting through my freezer stash!

IMG_4283

And now onto the workouts!

Monday:

Crossfit! We did sets of 5 lighter squats for a “deload,” but then the WOD was rough! It was 21-18-15-12-9-6-3 of thrusters at 65# and lateral over the bar burpees. This is basically Open workout 14.5/16.5, but lateral vs. bar facing, which in my opinion doesn’t really make much of a difference. From 2014 to 2016, I improved my time by over 4 minutes, so I was curious how this year would compare to last year. I believe I beat my time by 45 seconds, finishing in 18:39. Is that the difference between lateral vs. bar facing? I don’t know, but I’ll take it!

Tuesday:

I worked the closing shift, so I had time for morning yoga! Pre-yoga, I did a little speed work on the treadmill. I did a half mile warm up at 8:00 pace, and then did 5 rounds of 2 minutes at 7:00 pace, 1 minute walk. It felt good! Then, I did an hour long yoga class that ended in perfect time for me to go straight to work!

Wednesday:

Crossfit again. We did lighter presses, and then the benchmark WOD Grace. I did this in March in Hawaii, and again was curious to see how I’ve improved. I used 85# and did it in 4:59. My previous time was 6:08, so I was SUPER happy with that improvement! After dislocating my shoulder 2 years ago, and then breaking my foot last year, I never really got my Olympic lifting strength back since I was out for a while between the two injuries. I feel like I’m finally starting to get some of it back, which is probably why I have seen such a huge improvement just from March to now.

Thursday:

I did my own gym workout before work. I’m not willing to do 6am Crossfit on days I don’t start until 10:30,  or I’d never make it to closing! Plus, it’s good to have a day to work on what needs work!

Here’s what I did:

Squat program: 6-6-4 this week at 155#, 165#, 175#. It felt surprisingly good! One more week of this squat program!

3 rounds of this circuit:

6 each of single leg squats with 30# dumbbells

10 rdls with 30# dumbbells

12 speed skater jumps

10 squat jumps

10 push ups

Then I did this little conditioning number:

10 minutes, every minute on the minute of 5 burpees+5 push ups.

I finished with a 3 minute Blogilates ab video.

Friday:

Crossfit again. We did lighter deadlifts, and then this arm crusher that I had to scale every part of: 21-15-9 of handstand push ups, ring dips, and push ups. I had to scale this to strict press, box dips, and push ups on my knees. I was going to try to not scale the push ups, but my shoulders were absolutely shot by the time I reached that movement!

Saturday:

Rest

Sunday:

Rest
