Know Your Blogger

I’ve been trying to make a little bit of an effort to share more things about me than just my day to day life happenings, and thanks to some fabulous ladies who nominated me for awards, this is perfect! I’m going to pick and chose questions a little so this post isn’t out of hand though!

Kaitlin nominated me for the Liebster Award.

Image

Miranda nominated me for the Sunshine Award.

Image

And Brittany nominated me for a mixture of the two, so we’re gonna go with it šŸ™‚

For those of you unfamiliar with how the whole Award thing works, you post the award image, answer the questions from the blogger who nominated you, and include a link to their blog, write up questions for the bloggers you nominate, and nominate bloggers. Pretty simple. So let’s get to it!Ā

From Kaitlin:

If you could live anywhere in the country (or world) where would it be? Even if it was for just a short period of time.

Not going to lie, I think it’s hard to beat the Bay Area in terms of where to live in the country. As for the world, I’d love to live in Chile (I want to study abroad there) because I love the Spanish language, and there are penguins. Enough said.

Image

What’s your favorite form of exercise?

Weightlifting. Hands down.

What is something you have learned from blogging?

How to be talkative to strangers. I’m the type of person who doesn’t really like talking about myself. I’d much rather listen, so blogging has taught me I really do have something to say (whether or not what I say is worth listening to is another story!).

Favorite family recipe or family dish?

We have an amazing family bread pudding recipe, with rum sauce. Maybe if we make it again I’ll post the recipe!

Best way to spend a Saturday?

It would start with a morning Crossfit class, though not too early. Then, I’d go to the Farmer’s Market and get tons of delicious fruit. Maybe that evening I’d spend a night out with my friends.

Image

Dream job?

Well isn’t this the question of the year. I’m working on trying to figure that out now! I always thought I wanted to do nutritional research, but after spending the summer working in the kitten nursery, I’m seriously considering being a vet.

Image

Ā Why did you start your blog?

To be honest, the biggest thing was the awesome blogging community. I wanted to be part of it! Looking back, I’m GLAD I started my blog also because it’s been a way for me to chronicle my life. Plus, it’s forced me to take more pictures. It’s nice to be able to look back to certain points in my life, struggles or successes.

Thanks Kaitlin!

From Miranda:

Who is your healthy living inspiration?

Probably Tina from Carrots N Cake. I really learned what Crossfit was from her. I feel like we do a lot of the same fitness things as well (running and Crossfit) and she rocks at them.

Would you rather be always believed or always right?

Always believed (muahahaha). It’s really frustrating to be right, and know you’re right, but not be believed. Plus, “right” is a relative term.

Do you like wearing matching clothes to workout, or do you just throw on whatever?

Hah. Given the fact that everything I own seems to be the same color…I tend to match a lot. But I pretty much exclusively work out in t-shirts (usually old softball ones), so I’m not a big fan of matching top/bottom I guess.

Image
What’s your go-to fitness routine?

Spin, running, and Crossfit.

Would you rather get everything for free from Reebok, or from Lululemon?

I want pants from Lululemon but I’ve never actually gotten anything there. But I’m IN LOVE with some shorts from Reebok, plus my Crossfit shoes, so I’ll go with Reebok.

Image

(Shorts and Crossfit shoes)

What’s the biggest healthy living tip you would give to someone?

Exercise. It doesn’t have to be long, it doesn’t have to be elaborate. A simple daily walk, or even a 5 minute circuit is a place to start, and at least for me, enough to feel 1000x better.

And finally, the questions from Brittany:

What is your favorite Starbucks drink?

As for coffee drinks, I drink Cappuccinos exclusively. I like their Chocolate smoothies as well.

Image

Favorite thing about fall?

I really love fall. But Thanksgiving might be my favorite. My family has a tradition of staying in Napa. And of course the feast. The place we usually go to for Thanksgiving lunch has the most amazing butternut squash soup. This year I’m doing a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving though-so pumped! I take my Thanksgiving meal seriously. And a morning 10k is perfect for increasing my appetite.

Image

What are your current goals?

Wow, ok this is perfect, because I have a ton of goals. I’ll probably repeat this in a post later, but: 1. Not fail out of school. That’s a biggie. 2. Do a pull up by Thanksgiving. 3. PR a 5k at the Santa Run. 4. Lose all the Mono weight (aka the Freshman 15) completely by winter break.

Favorite meal?

This is my go-to favorite meal: cheese souffle, herb salad, and mushrooms.

Image

What fashion trends are you loving? Hating?

I’m all about the cardigans lately. And infinity scarves.

And now it’s your turn! Here are my questions:

1. Do you have any pets? Post a picture. If not (or if so), what is your dream pet?

2. What’s the best workout you’ve ever done?

3. Would you rather work out alone or in a group/team?

4. What’s one reason you’re glad you started blogging?

5. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring 3 foods, what would they be?

6. What is your definition of healthy?

7. A year from now on this day, what do you see yourself doing? Or what would you want to be doing?

8. Favorite holiday food?

9. If you only had one day to live, how would you spend it?

10. What’s your favorite piece of clothing and why?

Here are my nominations-if you haven’t been nominated, consider yourself nominated!

Holly@Healthy Living Holly

Skylar@The Blond in Black

Leigha@Minougirl

Audrey@In Shape Cupcake

I’m trying not to double the nominations, so if I missed you, you’re nominated!

Suddenly It’s Fall

Is it me or did fall just sneak up on us? When I left for vacation, it felt like summer (despite the sky looking a little like fall). When I came back, that was it. It was fall. At Crossfit last night, it was dark and windy; fall weather. I’m ready to embrace it. As much as I’ve enjoyed my summer, I’m ready for the productivity and routine that fall brings. Plus the pumpkin bread. I wish I would like the Pumpkin Spice Latte, but I know I won’t since for some reason I can’t stand sweet coffee. šŸ™

So what’s going on with me? Jet lag. I couldn’t fall asleep very well last night, which was unfortunate given today was a 5:10am wakeup (aka 2:10 in the timezone I was stuck in!). Then, my needy cat kept me up all night. I’m pretty sure he spent the entire time we were gone sleepy and being lonely.

Image

He spent all night meowing, playing loudly with his toy mouse, and climbing all over me. I gave up on sleep around 4:30 and tried to get my WIAW linked up, to no avail.Ā

Spin was good though, especially since I was already awake. After spin and reading some blogs, I was more than ready for a nap. I slept maybe 7 hours total the last 2 nights, and it finally caught up with me in the form of a 3 hour nap.Ā

Later that evening, it was Crossfit time. It was my first Hero WOD, since it was September 11. Hero workouts are named after a fallen soldier, and are usually long and hard.Ā

Today’s included overhead walking lunges, tons of box jumps, wall balls, and handstand push ups. I finished in around 28 minutes, so this one wasn’t crazy long. I should have stayed afterwards to clean but I was just done so I went home and ate.

Image

We made Asian chicken salad, with teriyaki chicken breast, snow peas, mandarin oranges, and onion, topped with an Asian-style dressing. I sweated buckets during Crossfit so this was the perfect refreshing meal.Ā

Although I haven’t really PRed any lifts this summer, I definitely feel stronger as a result of Crossfit. I mostly haven’t PRed because I haven’t had the opportunity to try for one. It’s a little hard for me to see the strength gains I’ve made since I was fairly weak to start the summer. With rowing all school year, I didn’t lift much, and the lifting I did do was not that great. Plus, Mono really knocked out a lot of strength. I’m probably stronger than a year ago, but it doesn’t seem like as much as it is since I spent most of the year weaker than I was a year ago. I was also thinking about my favorite WODs-I like the ones that involve Olympic Lifts. I also like the WODs where you have to break up the workout not because I’m out of breath or my muscles are burning, but because I can’t physically finish the lifts if I don’t. That really is a great feeling.

The one other thing I want to talk about today is shoes. I mentioned that I got these guys for non-running workouts/walking:

Image

So here’s the question-I’m not a huge fan of the pink, so should I swap out the laces for neon green ones? Will that look good? Since everything in my wardrobe seems to be shades of blue and neon green, I’m almost always unintentionally matching. Exibits A, B, C, and D.

Image

Actually, all of my workout/running shoes are blue and neon yellow/green. Thoughts?

Should I swap in neon green laces?Ā

WIAW- A Healthier Vacation

Hello, hello! I’m back from Maui, just in time to celebrate What I Ate Wednesday. Thanks to Jenn for hosting, although I’m sure she’s super busy with her adorable new baby!

Image

This post will cover the last couple of days of vacation plus Tuesday. First, I wanted to talk a little bit about being healthy on this vacation. My family’s vacations are often centered around food. And in Hawaii, with so many delicious things around-how could it not be? To be honest, I was a little nervous leading up to the vacation about staying reasonably healthy. The last time I went to Hawaii was almost 4 years ago. I remember getting back from that trip and being 10 pounds heavier than I left. I was not aware that was possible. While I may be a tad flabbier than I left, it certainly is nothing significant, and I returned feeling healthy and strong. So what changed?

1. I didn’t go crazy on desserts. Last time, I remember eating so many chocolate covered macadamia nuts that I felt sooo sick. While sure, I ate more sweets than normal, I didn’t really gorge at any one time. With the exception of a very large piece of chocolate cake that left me feeling off for 2 days after…

2. I split meals. Restaurant portions are often huge (especially at touristy places). Before the trip, my mom and I agreed to split things and it worked out perfectly. We didn’t split a couple of times and both agreed afterwards that we should have.

3. I exercised. I continued to follow my half marathon training plan, so I ended up running 4 times on my 10 day trip. I also visited a few local Crossfit boxes- in Lahaina, Upcountry Maui, and Kihei. Some of my favorite days of the trip were the days I got a tough Crossfit workout in, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. On one of my no-workout days, I was feeling really sluggish. I busted out a quick 5 minute workout, and I felt like a different person.

4. Eat a healthy breakfast. On vacation, we generally buy food to eat in our room. I was really excited for all the tropical fruit. A healthy breakfast helps you feel good going into your day. Example A: my tropical yogurt bowl-plain yogurt, mango, banana, passion fruit, sunflower seed butter.

Image

I came home feeling pretty strong. Before I get into a ton of delicious food, I wanted to talk a little about the last Crossfit I visited- Crossfit Kihei. I had heard from another Crossfitter that they weren’t very friendly. Well…that was kind of right. Myabe they don’t get as many visitors-I don’t know. I wasn’t exactly comfortable the whole time, in contrast to the other Crossfits where I felt like part of the team. The coach was really uninvolved, and there was no group warm up. Plus, for the WOD, I Rxed it when I really shouldn’t have. It was 50 snatched with squats mixed in. No one else Rxed it and I ended up finished wayyy after everyone else, which was a little embarrassing as I was just a visitor. It was a good workout though so I can’t complain. My shoulders really are feeling it today.Ā

Ok-food time!

Vacation food:

Image

Turkey sandwich which I got for the avocado-plus it has cranberry sauce-how fun!

Image

Ice cream! I regretted this choice. I don’t like coffee…and this didn’t have quite enough fudge. Oh well-you live and you learn!

Image

Salad with bleu cheese and asian pear.

Image

DELICIOUS dinner-macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi with pineapple salsa, jasmine rice, and veggies. My dad and I split this, and they were kind enough to serve it on separate plates.

Image

Lilikoi (passion fruit) cream pie.Ā

Image

Chocolate cream pie. Sooo funny story. When my family ordered these desserts to share, my dad asked the waiter for 2 forks…for himself. And yes, he did use both. My family takes our dessert seriously.

Image

Airplane food. You know you’re a blogger when your first instinct is to snap a shot before eating, even on a plane. There were a few pieces of lettuce under there for garnish-you better believe I ate those-vegetables are vegetables!

Aaand that leads us back to today. This morning I ate my typical pre-run breakfast-a ThinkThin bar plus fruit, and ran 8 miles. I would be so much faster if my foot wouldn’t act up! Regardless, I didn’t worry too much about pace. PRing this race will be hard since it’s a very hilly course (Nike Women’s in SF). This weekends long run is 10 miles. And that will be my last flat long run. I have a very hellish run planned for the 11 miler. Anyone from around Palo Alto knows the Dish trail-yeah, that will be smack in the center of my 11 miles. Kill me now….

I went to Whole Foods for lunch and groceries.Ā Image

I’m in love with Probiotics.

Image

Chicken, avocado and kale salad, chinese chicken salad, and a few fried plantains. I’m starting a mini Whole30 a week from Friday (I’m doing 7 days), and I want to try to ease myself into it. I’ve been thinking about it, and the list of things I wouldn’t want to give up to eat more Paleo is shrinking. Hummus for salads. Goat cheese. Laughing cow. Gummy vitamins. Run fuel. That’s about it. In the future, I may be sort of Paleoish. The big thing for me is watching the grains and sugar I eat since my blood sugar seems to like to crash.

Image

I also couldn’t resist trying these since I love dark chocolate. They’re good!

For dinner, we made Greek salads topped with spicy avocado hummus and a runny egg.Ā

Image

I also got another kind of hummus to try, which I ate with cucumbers. It’s really interesting and different!

Image

And dessert was some of the pineapple we brought back from Maui. So good.Ā

Image

A couple of random other things- I got new shoes to replace my walking around/general workout shoes. My old ones were blue and neon green. The new models are blue and pink. I don’t know about the pink though…What do you think? I might get neon green laces. That way I can accidentally match still since all my clothes seem to be neon green and blue.

Image

And lastly-my haul of Crossfit shirts from my trip! I swear, all I bought on the trip were 3 t-shirts but my suitcase was waaaay more full. Huh.

Image

And I’ll leave you with that! Have a great day!

How do you approach vacation? Has anyone done a Whole30? Tips?Ā

What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Coffee-yay or nay?

College Fact and Fiction

Hi Fitness is Sweet readers! My name is Miranda and I blog over at Miranda Runs, which follows me as I figure out college, plan a wedding, stay in shape, and eat healthy in the beautiful state of Montana!

I just started my freshman year of college and I am looooving it so far! I get to eat food that other people make for me, I have freedom, and I get access to a ginormous gym! Like really though, what more could a girl want?! šŸ˜‰ I even have a small gym in my residence hall… #winning

IMG_3852

Before I came to college, I definitely had some misconceptions about what college would be like. I obviously must have lived under a rock because ummm like none of those are actually true… Seriously though… watch this!

The professors will be horrible and mean.
False. All my first semester professors are seriously awesome. Obviously they all love teaching and want their students to succeed! My psychology teacher could be the brother of one of my high school teachers. Which is weird. I even took a picture of him like a stalker to send my teacher… #lookoutworld

IMG_3866

The dining hall food will suck.
False. I know some people swear on their life that this is true, but I’m actually suuuuper happy with the food here in Montana! It’s all locally grown, the baked goods are made in a bakery on campus, and a lot of the meat and produce is organic! I’ll admit that sometimes I don’t want to eat meat at every meal but I get that it’s Montana and the people here are made out of meat, thunderstorms, and trucks. šŸ˜‰
IMG_3853
IMG_3862

I’ll never be able to work out.
False. If anything, it’s EASIER to workout here than it was at home! Like I said, there’s a small gym on the floor under me that I go to if I want to get in and out of the gym fast. And the big fitness center is only half a mile away! So I get a workout in going to get my workout in šŸ˜‰ It is kind of intimidating trying to navigate my way through the college seniors pumping their iron, so I’ve been sticking to the cardio equipment at the fitness center and doing weights at the gym in my dorm. I’m doing a post on this soon over at my blog!

The gym is too far away.
False. Okay so if you look at the campus map, the fitness center is alllllllllll the way across campus from my dorm. But in reality, the campus is NOT that big and it’s only a half mile walk. Like I just said!

freshman15

I’ll gain the Freshman 15.
TBD. Okay so that cartoon is a littttle extreme. Haha! So far though, I haven’t gained 15 pounds in a week. I’ve really been focusing on exercising and eating well, so cross your fingers that I don’t gain that weight! Plus I’m not drinking so that should also help… šŸ˜‰ I don’t want my wedding dress to be too small!

IMG_3857

I’ll have no time to breathe.
True & False. True because I’m keeping myself busy with things I want to be doing! Like working out, hanging out with Christian, making friends with girls in my hall, doing yoga with my roomie, etc. False because I have time to do said things! I do have homework though. Since school just started, the workload isn’t TOO terrible but I did have to take notes on 15 pages of psych reading on the first day which was kind of an eye-opener.

There will be a line 600 people long for the sucky showers.
False. I’ve discovered that if you shower at 2-3 pm, you will not have to wait at all, period. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve even heard of anyone having to wait? We have 2 showers in my wing that 16ish girls share. So it’s not bad at all! The showers aren’t bad either. They’re a little cramped, but the shower head is adjustable, the water pressure is great, and the water temperature is awesome. Plus each shower has 2 compartments: one with a curtain and a bench and wall hooks to leave your things, and one with the shower and another curtain. I really like how our belongings aren’t out in the open!

catcounting

I’ll eat like crap.
False. Like I said before, Montana is really into eating healthy, organic, and being sustainable. The dining halls actually offer a ā€œliteā€ option which is less 400 calories and 10 grams of fat, and give nutritional data on everything they serve. Plus, they put the menus up online so we can look it over before we go! It’s really nice!

Doing laundry sucks.
Fact. Yes. Yes it does suck. I don’t know about your college, but here, washing a load of laundry takes 26 minutes and drying one takes a whopping 87 minutes. Plus the dryers take so long that they’re always in use. Good thing I figures out that it really only takes 40 minutes to dry my clothes so I can do 2 loads in the time it says it’ll dry 1. Mwahaha! Cheating the system

That’s it for me! I hope you join me over at Miranda Runs and make me laugh so that we can laugh together because I really do try and be funny…

Your turn!
What are your college facts & fictions?
Dining hall food = yay? nay?

Pineapple Burn

Hey guys! I hope you are all having a great weekend! I know I am! I swear, this week went by sooo fast. I wanted to recap the last 2 days for you guys, because they included some pretty fun things.Ā

Yesterday morning began with a 3 mile run. I had a pretty good pace going, which made me happy because my runs here have been pretty slow thus far. I rolled my ankle with about a mile left in the run though. As in, I was a mile away from the condo I’m staying at. So that stunk. I’m getting really sick of rolling my ankle on runs! I was able to walk it off a little, and continue the rest of the way VERY carefully. Meh.Ā

But guess what yesterday’s activity was?Ā

SEGWAY TOUR.

Image

It was sooo cool to ride a segway! It took a little getting used to, but it was really fun. The segway is pretty sensitive to your movements, and it can make really tight turns (you can turn around in place). It actually can go pretty fast! We started out by practicing in the parking lot with it on “beginner mode” which limits the speed. After some cone drills, we were ready for the open road!Ā

The tour took us to the Iao Needle, where we parked the segways and hiked around.

Image

The Iao needle is the long and skinny rock. This area was so pretty!

ImageImageImageImage

After our tour, we stopped at a small fruit stand. I’ve been dying to have coconut all trip, and the stand had fresh, young coconut. I’ve never had young coconut before-it was way more tender. The guy at the stand split open the husk with an ax and let us drink the water inside, and then chopped it up. We used pieces of husk for “spoons.”

Image

It was delicious! We also bought some passion fruit and guava, which was riper and sweeter than the fruits we had back at the condo. We have a lotttt of fruit to eat in the next 2 days, since none of it can be taken back to the Mainland.Ā

For lunch, we went to a Vietnamese restaurant. My mom and I shared the Make Your Own “Vietnamese burrito.” Which basically meant make your own fresh spring rolls. We were given a plate of fresh veggies, herbs, and tofu, plus rice paper which we dipped in hot water to soften.

Image

We then got to wrap it all up to form this!

Image

Disclaimer: this roll is actually one the server demoed for us. My were much more glob-like, but by the time I wrapped them all up, my hands were covered in food and touching my phone was a no-go.

For dinner that evening, we went to a local health foods grocery, which turned out to be entirely vegetarian. Cool! It was super fun to look around in-I’m guessing you all understand this phenomenon. I ordered a sandwich for dinner which had avocado. Enough said.Ā

Image

Today was also super awesome. Since I’m a cool food blogger, I wanted to tour a pineapple plantation. The plantation is in Upcountry Maui, sort of off the beaten trail in a tiny town. Since I’m obsessed, I just happened to check local Crossfit box locations, and there was one literally right across the street from where the tour left. I emailed the box last night and heard back within minutes.Ā

Everyone was soooo friendly. Not that they weren’t friendly in Lahaina, but even more so here. This box definitely had a small town feel, as it’s not necessarily in tourist territory. I mean, check out these pictures of the location.

ImageImageImage

I was also a big fan of the workout. Why? the warm up included rowing. My box never does rowing since we don’t have enough ergs, but given my background in rowing, I’ve been dying to show off a little. The warm up was a team workout-5 people per team, 6 minutes. Each person would row for a minute, while everyone else held a plank. I was the first rower so I got to go twice. We competed against another team. Sadly, we lost by 12 meters.Ā

We then went through some other warm ups and stretching, before doing the WOD, which was an 800 meter run and then a sequence of kettle bell swings and pull ups.Ā

I can’t say enough how great my experience here was. I ended up staying after for a little while talking to other Crossfitters. One couple was visiting from Texas, and they had been to some other boxes on Maui as well.Ā

Another bonus? The drop in class was free if you bought a t-shirt. T-shirts were $25 and normal drop in was $20. So basically I got a $5 t-shirt. Score!

Before the pineapple tour, we stopped at a little organic restaurant for brunch. My mom and I split French Toast (made with Hawaiian sweet bread, and served with maple syrup and honey butter) and an omelet with goat cheese, mushrooms, and pesto.

ImageImage

Next, it was time for the pineapple plantation tour! Check this view of the sugar cane out.

Image

Pineapples take 2 years to fully grow. Here’s a shot of some babies!

ImageT

Then we proceeded to the sea of bigger pineapples.

ImageImage

Then, it was sampling time! This plantation grows Maui Gold pineapples, which are sweeter and less acidic than other varieties. They are only 15% acid, and 85% sugar. They regularly test their crops to make sure this ration stays this way. They’re a pretty small operation-they only ship to the West Coast (sorry to those on the East Coast-believe me, you’re missing out!)

We sampled a few different stages of ripeness. First were the green pineapples. These were still pretty darn tasty! The core wasn’t as tough either-it was fine to eat.

Then, we sampled the green-gold. These are what you’d typically buy in stores. A few pineapple facts-pineapples are as good as they’ll ever be the moment they’re picked-they don’t ripen by sitting around your kitchen like other fruits. Also, the bottom is sweeter than the top (near the crown). We could really taste the difference. A quick tip-you can store your pineapple upside down to better distribute the sweetness. Or don’t tell anyone about this and hog the sweet part for yourself.Ā

Then we sampled the gold-these are yellow in color and have to be eaten within 2 days; they don’t sell these because they go bad so quickly. They were soooo good and sweet.Ā

Now, at this point, my tongue was feeling the pineapple burn. The delicious, sweet pain that comes with overconsumption of pineapples. But did you see how many pineapples were in the field?

Pictures were in order.

My family attempted to do a silly shot-which ended with my sister accidentally pulling my mom into the pineapple patch. “Accidentally.”

Image

There it is-a moment preserved on the internet for all to see.Ā

I thought the pineapple eating was over at that point. But nooo. We each got whole pineapples to eat like giant turkey legs.

ImageImage

They were so juicy too-I managed to stay fairly dignified and keep the juiciness to all over my face and hands. My sister? She was dripping juice from her elbows and down her legs. The pineapple was AMAZING. HOWEVER. I probably ate like 2 whole pineapples. At least 1. Can you imagine the acid burn on my tongue from the much pineapple? Heck, the burn on my lips and chin? Owwww. I pretty much had my fill of pineapple for the next 4 years.

Except that wasn’t all! They gave us each a pineapple to take home with us as well! Luckily, these can be taken home on the plane, so my tongue has some time to recover.Ā

Image

Have a great Sunday everyone! I’m hoping to get a decent run in. I wanted to do repeaters on a track, but I can’t find any tracks nearby! I think I’ll try doing them on a bike trail while nursing my wounded tongue.

Do you like pineapple? My parents once tried a crazy diet where you eat nothing but pineapple. What. Were. They. Thinking. #pain

Have you ever ridden a segway? If you do Crossfit, have you ever visited a different box?
