I’m Flying Jack!

Ok, confession: I’ve never actually seen the Titanic. Moving on…

Yesterday morning (Friday) I donned by neon shirt and headed out for an early morning run. I checked the weather report-47 degrees was the low…and the low was at the time of my run. Awesome. The temperatures are really starting to cool down here. Want to know something bizarre? Next week we have lows of 47 and highs of 80. While it does tend to get cold at night here, that much temperature difference is insane!

3 miles were on the schedule for Friday morning. I ran half a mile there, and half a mile back, so my workout was 8x400m repeats. I really like these-and yesterday I felt like I was flying. I don’t wear my Garmin for these, but I’m sure I was well under my goal pace. Something I like even more? 200 repeats. I’ll get to do a lot of those while I train to PR my 5k. SO pumped. I just felt really great out there Friday-I felt like I was flying on my 9 mile run last weekend as well-I feel like I’ve suddenly gotten a lot faster-perfect timing though! T minus 8 days until RACE DAY.

I’m liking my new post early morning workout coffee ritual.

It’s always cold in the morning, plus if I go straight from my workout, I beat all the on the way to work/class crowd. Perfect.

Walking back to my dorm, I saw this:
Image

I wish I lived on the first floor. The cat is back! I called to it and it came running over to me.

Image

Such a sweetie! He almost made me late to class, but so, so worth it.

ImageImage

And…um…he followed me in the door. Which was obviously a problem-it was a good thing my friend was there to kick him out because I definitely didn’t have the heart to do it!

I took zero food pictures from yesterday. But I did do things. And eat things. My dorm had a “homecoming” dance, so we all got dressed up and had fun. When I get the pictures back, I’ll show you guys! I also got ready and totally showered in 15 minutes flat. Because my friends wanted to leave and I was watching How I Met Your Mother….Priorities people! It was actually a lot of fun-everyone was expecting it to be super awkward, but it really wasn’t. It was great to connect with people from my dorm.

This morning I decided to go to Crossfit. 2 weeks ago I PRed my clean and jerk, but today I just couldn’t get it up. You can’t PR everyday, and you don’t always have good lifting days. I wasn’t committing on the jerks, and I kept missing the cleans. I’m pretty sure in the last 2 weeks I’ve developed some bad habits-it felt awesome 2 weeks ago, but then the following week, I started banging up my legs doing cleans.

Image

Which is not right. I was having the same problem today, but no bruising. I could tell I just wasn’t getting in the right position. But it happens. I was frustrated, but looking forward to the WOD: 3 400m sprints with 2 minutes of rest, and then 1 minute of rest in between. I brought my running shoes for this. I was expecting to finish last because everyone else was guys, but it didn’t turn out that way at all. I beat everyone in my heat (we split into 2 heats, starting 10 seconds apart to avoid running into each other), and even passed a person or two from the heat before me. It. Felt. Awesome. I’m starting to really look forward to training for the 5k-I haven’t done much fast running lately, and I forgot how much I liked it! And passing people? Best thing ever.

On a sidenote, I REALLY need to do a timed mile, but I’ve been putting it off. My last one was 8:00, but that was pretty soon after mono and before any half training started. I would think I’d be somewhere around 7:30. I would LOVE to get down to under 7:00 like back in the day, buttt we’ll see about that.

After my workout, I made the world’s worst smoothie. I brought my little packet of chocolate protein powder and cocoa powder to the dining hall, and even waited in the super long blender line. I added blueberries, mango, and milk. And…..WAIT FOR IT-arugula. I wanted spinach but they only had an arugula spinach mix, so I figured, why not? WRONG. WRONGWRONGWRONG. Arugula is a lot more flavorful than spinach. So I had 2 giant glasses of chocolate arugula. It was awful.

Image

I attempted to drink it alongside a biscuit and some chicken/guac. But then gave up and just got another biscuit. Shudder.

Hopefully you guys are having something at least a little more delicious! Tomorrow is my last “long” run before my race. I’m doing 6, even though my plan calls for 8. Last time I felt like my legs really benefitted from the extra rest. The body wants what the body wants! (Which, by the way, is NOT an arugula smoothie.)

Have a great Saturday!

A Chill Day

Are you guys all having a good weekend? I definitely am! And Sunday marks the official 2 week out point for my race! I’m starting to get excited!

I haven’t really posted in a few days (besides my scheduled post) so I have a kind of random selection of pictures from the last couple of days.

Thursday morning started with Crossfit-lots of deadlifts! I refueled appropriately:

Image

Nothing too crazy happened during the day- I got a veggie wrap for lunch with hummus. I didn’t actually bring money with me, and it was the only real food I could afford with the few dollars in my backpack.

Image

And my pumpkin butter obsession continues (more on that in a minute!). One thing about dorm life-I have the tendency to buy something and eat nothing but that item until it is gone, which is really quickly. And then I buy something else and the cycle repeats. I guess this is what happens when grocery trips are infrequent…Well, the pumpkin butter is certainly disappearing quickly! I made “paleo oatmeal”-I wasn’t trying to make paleo or oatmeal, but I threw a ton of things in a bowl and that was what I got! This was applesauce, egg whites, chia seeds, coconut, and almond milk. Topped with pumpkin butter! It really was just a medium for pumpkin butter. I wanted pumpkin oatmeal, but I don’t have any oats….so there’s that.

That evening at flag football, the soreness from a full week of heavy lifting began to set in, and my hamstrings began a war on me that would last another day. I also did the spin class I wrote for myself that evening-it turned out to be pretty good! I definitely have a tendency to do a lot more in the saddle than out…talk about a quad burner! I really don’t like the spin bikes at school-they feel really plastic-y, and I don’t really get the feel of the road. It’s more like moving your legs with resistance that spinning-but the quad burn can definitely sneak up on you!

Afterwards, it was pretty late so I refueled with hot chocolate. Kind of. Another #dormlife problem-no milk. And as much as I love almond milk, it has almost no protein. I mixed (not very well based on all the powder floating around) chocolate protein powder, brown rice syrup, a little honey, cocoa powder, and almond milk and heated it up. Perfect. Kind of.

After my workout, a little socializing while drinking this concoction, and doing a pre-lab, I was beat. I woke up yesterday morning still really tired. I debated skipping my 5 mile hilly run, but I knew I’d never be able to fall back asleep because I had already gotten up. The run went pretty well-these are some intense hills. It took a while for my legs to loosen up, but I’m glad I got some hill work in. There was just one glitch-my shoe inserts. I think they do help prevent foot pain, but they give me the worst blisters-it’s only one foot for some reason, but I took them both out halfway through the run (so I’d be even). My foot hurt a little by the end of the run-so I’m not really sure what I should do at this point.

Here are some random eats from Friday:

Image

ImageImage

My roommate and one of my other friends baked banana bread-you better believe I was all over that!

After my run, my legs kind of tightened up and all the soreness from the week hit. My hamstrings felt like death-I can’t even remember the last time they were that sore! After a 2 hour Chem lab (we finished 2 hours early!), my legs felt 100x better. Which was good given I had flag football practice. I swear, I’m so bruised up right now! I may or may not have bar shaped bruises going up my legs…at Crossfit, I got a big bruise on the front of my leg because I kept dragging the bar against my leg doing cleans. Smart one Aurora.

(Finally fading)

Plus, I’m getting a little beat up playing football. I guess that’s just what happens in sports-I used to be pretty bruised up from softball regularly.

Back to food. GUYS. I had the best idea. Pumpkin butter. Cottage cheese. I really liked how the pumpkin cream cheese was creamy and a little savory-but it’s too rich to eat with a spoon (or is it?). I found out that a little market on campus now uses meal plan dollars (part of our dining plan-I NEVER use them) and they actually sell really good, useful stuff. It’s basically a mini grocery. And meal plan dollars are like free money.

Image

I immediately dug into the cottage cheese.

Image

YUM. But for my next snack, I kicked it up another notch.

Image

Cottage cheese. Sunflower seed butter. Pumpkin butter. Apple chips. That’s gourmet my friends. Or at least college gourmet. SUCH a good combo. Too bad I’m out of cottage cheese…and apple chips…and almost pumpkin butter.

This morning I managed to sleep in until 9-which is a pretty big accomplishment for me! I hit the gym first thing-but I wanted to give my legs a complete rest day after this past week, and before tomorrow’s 9 miles. I did something I’ve never done before-arms and abs day. I NEVER do arm workouts-I usually do full body workouts, and occasionally leg days. But I didn’t want to do anything that put any stress on my legs at all. My workout ended up consisting of mostly pull ups and planks. I’m so close to being able to do a full pull up-only 25 pounds of assistance, which is such a huge improvement. My goal is to get it by Thanksgiving! And with the quantity I did today, I should be able to get there!

After my workout, I was starving and more than ready for brunch. I was really hoping to get a smoothie, but the line was insane, as was the waffle line. I still haven’t gotten a waffle yet this year!

But then again, I’m never going to complain about copious amounts of guacamole.

Image

Giant Mexican salad. I also had a biscuit and this frozen fruit.

Image

I spent the day doing nothing too crazy. I realized that Netflix streams season 8 of How I Met Your Mother. I was considering going to the football game today, but I decided to just hang out. Dinner with How I Met Your Mother? That sounds just right to me.

Image

I made a scramble with the last of my spinach, plus laughing cow garlic and herb and pesto. I finally peeled myself away from the screen to do laundry, which is where I am right now. I discovered that blogging is the perfect thing to do while doing laundry!

And with that, I’ll leave you all to your weekends! I’m going back to the trail by the bay to run, so I’m visiting my cats and grabbing lunch with a high school friend also home this weekend.

What are your favorite TV shows? What other things should I put pumpkin butter on? What amazing pumpkin products should I try? Can you tell I’m obsessed with all things fall?

Real Athletes Wear Black Socks

I like how my blogger break lasted all of one day. Heh. I just have too much to say to you guys! Yesterday’s workout consisted mainly of cleans. Is it weird that I like hang cleans way more than full cleans, and I can probably lift more with hang cleans? I have trouble getting into the proper position on full cleans. I wanted to lift yesterday and not have my legs too sore today, because today was a timed mile! Here’s the workout, although I ran out of time to finish everything. Yes, I finally faced the erg for the first time again. I felt so uncoordinated but I guess that’s what happens. ImageI don’t have that many pictures for you but here’s what I do have:ImageThe deliciousness that is a yogurt bowl. Vanilla greek yogurt, cinnamon apple bread, and sunflower butter. Plus more sunflower butter. SO addicted. But hey, my face is clearing wayyy up so that’s fine by me!ImageAdorable mug.ImageChocolate Soy Bomb smoothie from Calafia. More on that in a minute!ImageMy dorm has make your own pizza every night. I tried it for the first time yesterday. It was pretty good for pizza, nice and hot. But I’m always surprised by the fact that I don’t rally like pizza…And I had to blot a ton of grease of the top of the cheese, although the pizza wasn’t super greasy overall.ImageA TON of spinach in a microwave egg scramble with Garlic and Herb Laughing Cow cheese (this stuff is awesome).ImageRegular (non-frozen) fresh yogurt with strawberry rhubarb puree and mango from Fraiche, plus a spice muffin. The yogurt was awesome! I was worried it would be too plain but the puree really makes it. And it’s not very sweet. The muffin was a bit too spice-y for my taste though. I need to get yogurt more often…I briefly considered how awesome it would be for me to make my own yogurt. And then realized I don’t trust myself to deal with all that bacteria…I would probably end up getting really sick.

So yesterday, I had a 9 am class and was done with my classes for the day by 10:15. I cannot begin to describe this kind of freedom. It was sooo nice. I love not having such a crazy tight schedule. Of course, I have work, but I have some hope of getting it all done now!

As a result, in the afternoon I biked over to Trader Joe’s with an empty backpack and big dreams. Haha. Really though, all I wanted were vegetables. I realized a lot of the time when I’m snacking a lot, all I really want is veggies but I didn’t have any in my dorm. That all changed. Although I used like half a bag of spinach in this morning’s breakfast. Here’s the haul:ImageSpecial notice for the carrot juice and green juice. I tried the carrot juice this morning. It’s pretty good, surprisingly sweet, although there is no added sugar. I think I like it, but I think I’ll like it even more when I’m more used to it. Tonight’s dinner is shown as well: the curry chicken salad. I picked that up at Calafia, which happens to be next to Trader Joe’s.

This morning I ran my timed mile. It felt way better than I was expecting. 8:20. Not bad. I’m happy with that as a starting point, and I think I’ll be able to see significant improvement fairly quickly. I also did 3/4 of a mile of sprint 100 m/ walk 100 m. I would usually do this with a jog instead of a walk, but I’m still building up my stamina. I topped that off with an ab series:Image

Has anyone ever said something to you that just kind of stuck with you? One of my softball trainers told me “Real athletes wear black socks.” I don’t know why, but that kind of stuck with me. So I wore black socks for my timed mile. I’ll take all the help I can get. I definitely did that for my 6k tests too while rowing. ImageI miss being an athlete, and rowing really wasn’t my sport because it didn’t really involve playing. Soooo…when a soccer player posted on facebook that the Stanford Club soccer team was looking for players, I jumped at the chance. But here’s the thing. I really miss soccer. I started playing when I was 5. However, I have not played in ohhh 4 years? And I’m horribly out of shape (thanks mono). Aaaand I’m practicing with them on Monday. Yes. I realize I am in waaaay over my head. But what’s the harm, right? It’s unlikely that they’ll take me but that’s ok. I have this weekend to get ready. Have I told you guys that After practicing soccer last week (I was practicing for Intramurals), the top of my foot and entire from on my shin was so sore that walking was super difficult. Well I went back out there today. And I’ll go again tomorrow, if I can walk. But guess what? I ordered Pro Compression socks (at a discount, thanks Julie!) and they came yesterday! My dad brought them when we went out to practice. So I’m wearing them now in hopes that they will prevent soreness. I got them for my half marathon in August, but hopefully they work for soccer soreness as well!

IMG_2192I was going to post about a more serious topic in this post as well, but it’s already pretty long so I’ll save it for tomorrow. 🙂

Have a nice night!
