WIAW-Rough Morning

Guys. It was a rough one over here. But let’s still celebrate food as of late with Jenn!

WIAWbutton

I figured out that whatever weird sinus-y thing I’m dealing with is allergies, not illness. Unfortunately, that still kept me up a bit last night! On top of that, I was up fairly late doing homework. I woke up for 6am Crossfit, which was definitely not enough sleep. The workout was a good one though-and getting off campus helped my allergies. For strength, we did overhead squats and toes to bar. The conditioning was a 15 minute AMRAP of:

5 dumbbell ground to overhead (I used 25#s-ground to overhead means clean to shoulders and then push press or push jerk to overhead)

7 pull ups (banded for me)

9 squats (no weight)

I finished exactly at 9 rounds! This was one of those that ends up being pretty hard because none of the moves are terrible so you can just get tons of reps in.

The roughness started afterwards when I decided I needed a big cup of coffee to get me through the day. I normally drink espresso drinks, so I don’t have as good of a gauge of how much caffeine is in regular coffee. Normally I do half a packet of instant in milk, but this time I did a full packet.

I basically chugged it on an empty stomach and was about halfway through my banana with sunflower seed butter when I realized I felt pretty weird. And it quickly dawned upon me that I had made a terrible mistake. My heart started racing and I started shaking. Besides feeling awful, being over caffeinated also really freaks me out. I felt really nauseous and shaky for the morning, but it was a lot better by my 11am class. Even now, in the evening, I’m not feeling 100% but definitely a LOT better.

Lunch was super lame and picture less because I was scared to eat anything too heavy-2 crackers and an English muffin. After lunch, I felt a lot less shaky. The good news is I have still managed to get a fair amount of studying done for my midterm tomorrow despite this!

I was starving mid-afternoon and feeling better so I heated up the last slice of my drowned cranberry bread.

IMG_1135

I was starving again around when dinner opened-and it smelled delicious through my window! I went with pretty basic foods still.

IMG_1136

Mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, a little roasted cauliflower, and chipotle turkey soup. I was feeling god enough for a few bites of peach crispy as well-note that this plate is actually much smaller!

IMG_1137

So…that was my day. Rough. I’m officially on a caffeine detox. I think these past couple of weeks I was depending a bit too heavy on coffee to get me through the day instead of sleep anyway, which wasn’t sustainable. I need to make sleep more of a priority!

And since today’s food was kind of boring, here are a couple of other meals!

IMG_1131

I have a new batch of lunches! Chicken and mashed yams are same old, same old, but this time I have roasted garlic broccoli to accompany them!

IMG_1132

A basic dinner-some type of vinaigrette based black bean salad with strips of something unidentifiable, BBQ chicken, and sweet potato fries. How pretty is that plate? So colorful!

And now, I have to get back to studying!

Coffee-yay or nay?

Oxygen and OChem

Guys. Guess who’s FINALLY done with Organic Chemistry? THIS GIRL. It took me FOREVER for one reason or another (like getting mono and having to drop it 8 weeks into a 10 week quarter…) but I’m finally DONE!

In honor of that, I wanted to share this interesting article on oxygen/oxidation. It was written a professor whose nutrition class I took my freshman year. It discusses why eating charred food isn’t good and why you need to be careful with your storage of omega-3s (they go bad quickly). So check it out!

Food+Fitness

I made my valiant return to Crossfit at home last night. And was reminded why this is my favorite Crossfit. For some reason at my school Crossfit the WODs never involve barbell movements, and this one had all my favorites!

Skill/Strength was handstands (which I haven’t done since summer…oops) and bulgarian split squats.

WOD:

4 rounds of:

20 deadlifts(135/95)

15 front squats

10 hang cleans

5 shoulder to overhead

The prescribed weight was 95 but that was going to be pretty heavy for everything but the deadlifts so I went with 75# and it still kicked my butt! I finished in 17:45. And am already sore.

Dinner post workout was leftovers (teriyaki chicken) plus garlic roasted broccoli. Guys, I know I don’t do a ton of recipes, but this one is amazing. I could just eat pans and pans of it.

Followed by some caramel ice cream.

And this THIS morning, I went to one of my favorite spin classes that I haven’t been to since summer! It was good, and I got some ideas for my own classes. Which is good since I got the call to teach again tomorrow! Can’t wait!

I refueled with chocolate milk before later having toast with cheese and a tangerine.

So-any good workout song suggestions?

WIAW-Latest Eats

Happy Wednesday! We all know what that means! Thanks Jenn!

With 12 days of Christmas, I haven’t gotten to share some of the random things I’ve eaten in the past week or so! How tragic would that be?

Also-another exciting note-I entered the lottery for the Cherry Blossom 10 miler in DC in the spring. I think the odds I get in are low but how amazing would that be??

Ok. Food. As promised.

IMG_0140

Spinach and artichoke soup, from a Buzzfeed article of all things! Topped with parmesan.

IMG_0143

Post-turkey trot, pre-Thanksgiving breakfast of mini frittatas and a crumpet.

IMG_0202

A really freaking amazing salad in Napa. Avocado, fresh mozzarella, tomato, olive oil, and sea salt. Simple but perfect.

IMG_0209

Baby fruit tart from Napa.

IMG_0210

Chocolate sea salt caramel cupcake.

IMG_0243

Trader Joe’s mushroom risotto with some spinach tossed in.

IMG_0245

Carrot soup with cilantro.

IMG_0261

Tupperware lunch of leftover broccoli and chicken. (Plus a sweet potato that was scarfed down earlier…)

IMG_0265

Dining hall dinner. Roasted veggies and chicken, and a mini veggie pot pie. The highlight was the zucchini, which was roasted with garlic and cheese.

IMG_0272

Back to my typical breakfast of yogurt+sunbutter+peaches.

IMG_0275

Dining hall lunch on a rainy day-eggplant parmesan, veggies with Alfredo (not my favorite veggies served that day so you gotta do what you gotta do!) and polenta with sundried tomatoes.

And a bonus because how cute is he?

IMG_0208

What is something that you haven’t had in a while?

For me it was the eggplant parm-I don’t think I’ve ever had it before!

Skipping Burpees

Do you ever have one of those days when you just feel like you killed your workouts?

That was yesterday for me. I’m loving these afternoon treadmill runs!

I did my heavy squats, and then I knocked out a treadmill speedy run. I started with 2 miles at an 8:00 pace. This is big for me, since I haven’t run fast much lately! I’m hoping to slowly increase this distance-honestly it’s harder mentally than physically!  So maybe if I do that I’ll have some hope of being prepared for the turkey trot? I followed those 2 miles with 5 intervals-2:00 @ 7:30, 2 min walking. I covered 4 miles total. It felt amazing. After all that running though, I made sure to come back and ice my foot right away! I’m pretty sure my feet like the extra cushion of the treadmill.

In terms of food, yesterday was pretty clean cut.

Breakfast part 1: cranberry orange bread (so good!!).

Breakfast part 2:

IMG_0038

Lunch: Leftover Goat Cheese Souffle+ roasted carrots and a persimmon.

IMG_0043 IMG_0044

Snack immediately post run: coconut covered date roll.

IMG_0045

After my workout, I was pretty ravenous for dinner. I had a salad with BBQ chicken, more veggies, and then I went back for a roll on the side.

IMG_0046

I also snacked on a protein bar plus some cheese and crackers later on!

So…last night I managed to be really dumb and somehow totally wiped out…in my room…Our beds are sort of raised, so I either have to jump up and down or use a chair. I tend to only use a chair when I’m lazy, which apparently I was. Somehow while I was stepping off the chair I lost my balance, and my other leg got caught on the back of the chair, so I had no where to go but down-I ended up falling pretty hard on my knee. Luckily I was wearing pants, but I still have pretty bad carpet burn plus a bruise. The only upside? It meant there was no way I was doing burpees during this morning’s Crossfit workout. I subbed 1 squat+1push up for each burpee….which was definitely much preferred!

When was the last time you wiped out?
