Denver Bachelorette Party

Hello! I’m blogging to you from my new place, but I’ll get to that in a separate post! Today, I want to recap my adventures from last weekend in Denver, CO! My sister is getting married in less than a month, and as her maid of honor, it was my job to plan the bachelorette party! We did it in Denver because her bridesmaids are scattered all around the country. One lives in Denver, and one was passing through for the week, plus it was pretty central location!

Friday, I picked my sister up. She had an adorable kitty guest keeping her fiancé company while she was gone!

I fully outfitted my sister upon arrival.

It was fun taking her through the airport and onto the plane with the veil! She got many congratulations. (Btw, her shirt says “I got the hubby,” and ours say “we got the bubbly.”)

I’m going to do a mostly photo recap of the weekend. When we got there, we went to dinner with her college friend at a vegan restaurant. I had a tofu bacon avocado sandwich with fried green tomato on GF bread, with sweet potato fries.

We grabbed a beer after, and I got a blueberry wheat beer. It was AMAZING, and definitely one of my top beers.

IMG_4937

We stayed with one of my sister’s other friends who lived in Denver, and she had the sweetest pup!

Saturday was the day I really had planned, so we’ll do a photo recap!

Coffee @ Steam Espresso Bar.

IMG_4958

Lunch @ Avanti Food and Beverage for Quiero Arepas. I always saw these on the PaleOMG instagram, and when I realized we were in Denver and I was in charge of finding good food, I was PUMPED to try them OMG.

IMG_4961 IMG_4962

Fried plantain, black bean, avocado.

IMG_4963 IMG_4967

Pedicures, plus a new pup friend.

IMG_4978 IMG_4984 IMG_4987

First draft, which is basically self-serve beer on tap, froyo style. There were like 40 things on tap, and you have a card that you swipe and then pour as much as you want. It was AWESOME. You could try a ton of different things!

The Source for delicious tacos. I had a mushroom and a chicken.

IMG_5003 IMG_5005

The Chocolate Lab for apps. They incorporate chocolate into a ton of savory items!

IMG_5009 IMG_5013

Hummus with cacao nibs, white chocolate babaganoush.

IMG_5012

Roasted cauliflower with cocoa drizzle.

IMG_5010

Chocolate milk stout/espresso beer float.

Then it was back to the house for games and bubbly, before hitting the town.

IMG_5033 IMG_5035

Sunday morning, my sister and I were the first ones up, shockingly. Not shockingly for me, but definitely for her!

IMG_5052

Since I had to catch my flight before brunch and she needed caffeine, we found a nice little coffeeshop nearby!

IMG_5053

Unsurprisingly, my flight to SFO was delayed a little bit thanks to runway construction, so at the airport, I actually took the time for a sit-down lunch. I had a salad with roasted artichokes, goat cheese, dried cranberries, and BBQ pulled chicken.

Dinner at home was a good one. Grilled corn with my watermelon feta salad.

That’s all for now!

Eating and Limping My Way Through Napa Valley

Hey guys! I hope everyone’s week is going well. Today I want to share my little road trip with you guys!

Immediately after my race, I headed home to shower and pick up my dog for a little family trip.

My family always goes to Napa over Thanksgiving, but this year we decided to do a quick trip before school started since we didn’t have a vacation this spring/summer. We’ve also never taken my dog before!

We arrived in time for a late lunch in St. Helena. Luckily, the area is very dog friendly and we were able to eat outside with my dog.IMG_9163

We went to a place we discovered last year, called the St. Helena Bistro. They had the most amazing brussels sprouts ever, and while those weren’t in season yet, I still ate very well!

To start, we shared bruschetta and a grilled artichoke. Both were fantastic.

For my main course, I went with a salad with avocado, heirloom tomato, fresh mozzarella, and olive oil.

IMG_9155

It was delicious and so fresh! We also shared a dessert-crispy banana with chocolate gelato.

IMG_9156

We walked around St. Helena a bit, and stopped in an olive oil store for olive oil and barbecue sauce tasting. Another must visit place in St. Helena is Woodhouse Chocolates. They have the most amazing candies-the fresh mint tastes just like eating a mint leaf.

After walking around in the heat, we checked into the hotel to relax and watch some football and baseball before dinner. Dinner was a place in downtown Napa I found as one of the top things to do in Napa. They were known for their pizza, so we chose to split a couple of pizzas and some appetizers, starting with a simple salad with lemon vinaigrette and parmesan.

IMG_9196

The other app was creamy polenta with grated cheese on top.

IMG_9197

The pizzas we chose were margherita and white cream with shaved truffle. Obviously, the truffle pizza stole the show. I’ve never actually seen a truffle before-I’ve only had truffle oil before so this was quite the treat!

IMG_9198

On the way home from dinner, we stopped for dessert at another place in downtown Napa, Grace’s Table. We split a vanilla bean cheesecake, devil’s food cake, and chocolate mousse with brandy cherries.

The next morning, after a quick hotel breakfast, we visited the Petrified Forest, which was dog friendly. This is an area where trees have basically been turned to stone as the result of a nearby (now dormant) volcano erupting and spewing ash everywhere, followed by flooding over the area. It was amazing-the trees looked just like a normal log, but they were stone!

IMG_9216

We went on about a mile hike through the forest to look at the trees and some ash fall. My feet were not feeling so hot post-race day, and walking was not pretty at all.

IMG_9213

The photo below is a Manzanita tree-it looked like someone had dripped red paint all over the bark-it was an amazing looking tree.

IMG_9214

The next picture is what the petrified trees look like when they were first discovered and before they have been cleaned and exposed.

IMG_9215

When we went on the path to see some ash fall, we had a great view of the former volcano.

IMG_9218

And here’s a shot of me with all the pale and sparky ash.

IMG_9220

And another picture from the hike. My dog is quite photogenic!

IMG_9222

Afterwards, we headed back to downtown Napa to Oxbow Public Market for lunch. It’s an indoor market with places to eat and buy gourmet foods. We went to a place we discovered last year that appeared on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives for their arepas. They were so, so delicious. I got the vegetarian on a sweet corn arepa, which was filled with tofu, fried plantain, avocado, and black beans. So, so good.

IMG_9228

For the last hurrah before returning home, we went to a highly recommended (by the Internet) bakery called Sweetie Pie where we shared a coconut raspberry bar, salted caramel fudge cake (my choice), and chocolate soufflé cake.

IMG_9231

Then it was time to say goodbye to Napa, and we headed home.

IMG_9232

We haven’t taken my dog on a trip in years, but luckily this area is very dog friendly. In addition to lots of outside seating and water bowls for dogs placed outside, almost everyone who passed us stopped to comment on how cute he was and to pet him, which he of course loved. One funny thing is that even though he’s 13 now, almost everyone asks if he’s a puppy.

He clearly had a great time, and slept the whole way home.

IMG_9234

Overall, it was a really fun couple of days! We did some different things that were more dog friendly, and had a great time!

Do you have a vacation spot your family likes to go?
