I’m currently in Napa. My parents are watching basketball-not really my thing. I’m all about baseball! But the Warriors are currently making history so that’s cool.

I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving! I’ve had a great week so far.

Tuesday I picked up my Turkey Trot bib!

IMG_4839

I also went to home Crossfit, which is always fun! The WOD was a length chipper: 100 double unders, 50 deadlifts (95#), 50 burpees, 50 kb swings.

For dinner, we had a crockpot meal-chicken caccitore! Served over a bed of spinach.

IMG_4841

I also made some persimmon bread. I used my classic banana bread recipe, but substituted 6 peeled and blended persimmons.

IMG_4842 IMG_4847 IMG_4846 IMG_4848

Wednesday was spent at a killer spin class, and then relaxing with my kitty. He’s a fan of my heated blanket!

IMG_4856

For dinner, we made salad with persimmons and goat cheese, and then a spaghetti squash “macaroni” and cheese. Topped with lightly roasted tomatoes and basil.

IMG_4862 IMG_4863

My Thanksgiving began with a 10k Turkey Trot! This is my 3rd year doing the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot. It’s the biggest in the world!

IMG_0131

It was quite chilly-low 30s on the drive up. I came prepared.

IMG_0134

A minute before the race started, I dropped my layers minus some ear warmers and gloves.

IMG_0146

This race was fun! I tried to keep a pace that was challenging but not so uncomfortable that the race wouldn’t be fun. 2 days ago I realized I ran this race 2 minutes faster than I had been thinking. I remembered 1/3 of the way into the race was that was because my last 10k over the summer was at that slower pace! I realized this as I was cruising at a much faster pace than that haha.

IMG_0298 IMG_4865

30 seconds faster than last year-I’ll take it!

After the race, we had a snack and then cleaned up before heading up to Napa.

IMG_0303 IMG_4872 IMG_0316 IMG_0309

We met my grandpa and uncle there, and then it was time for the buffet!

IMG_4874 IMG_4875

The highlight, as always, was the butternut squash soup. It’s ridiculously creamy and tastes just like fall. My salad plate featured vegetarian sushi, beet salad which I added goat cheese to, and some cheeses with grapes and honey.

I didn’t catch a picture of my main plain but I has some turkey, mashed potatoes, a taste of sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and roasted carrots.

Dessert was exciting as always.

IMG_4877 IMG_4878 IMG_4879

My dessert was the inside of white chocolate cranberry cheesecake, the inside of pumpkin pie, chocolate covered strawberries, and a little chocolate cup with raspberry mousse.

IMG_4876

After the big meal, we gelled out in our hotel room watching The Good Wife.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?

Pigs, Goats, and Pineapple-Oh My! https://fitnessissweet.com/2015/09/13/pigs-goats-and-pineapple-oh-my/ https://fitnessissweet.com/2015/09/13/pigs-goats-and-pineapple-oh-my/#comments Sun, 13 Sep 2015 21:29:59 +0000 http://fitnessissweet.com/?p=20503 Read More]]> Hello! I’m checking in from Maui once again! These past couple of days included some of my favorite parts of our trip. I think the title says it all! Be prepared for lots and lots of pictures!

Friday morning began with a visit to the beachside juice stand. My fresh squeezed orange pineapple juice was enjoyed beachside, with some yogurt and fruit.

IMG_3850 IMG_3851

First kitty spotting of the trip by the beach!

IMG_3857 IMG_3859

After we cleaned up, we headed to Lahaina. Folks-it was a scorcher that day! Upper 90s and humid.

IMG_3862 IMG_3864

My dad is constantly in search for the best lau lau (pork wrapped in taro and banana leaves), so we stopped for lunch at a restaurant with local fare.

IMG_3863

Teriyaki chicken for me!

Dessert was much anticipated-a gluten free bakery! We shared a cream puff and then I had a chocolate cupcake with lilikoi (passionfruit) icing.

IMG_3866 IMG_3865

It was impossible to tell the cream puff was gluten free, and the cupcake was phenomenal. The cake was moist and dense, and the frosting was the perfect tart counterbalance.

We walked through downtown Wailea, burning up the whole time as we stopped in and out of shops. Finally, we reached our destination: Dan’s Greenhouse. This is a little hidden treasure-we’ve actually been coming to this little shop every time since I was a child. This is also where I got my beloved plumeria plant that has lived in my dorm the past 2 years! But the best part??

IMG_3931IMG_0234

Miniature pot belly pigs! I’ve mentioned before that I don’t eat red meat, and these guys are partly why. I think I stopped eating pork around 5th grade, after absolutely falling in love with these guys. This little guy was just a ball of energy. I believe he was 6 months old-he was 8 pounds but will grow to about 15. They eat a vegan diet-similar to what they eat in the wild. If you overfeed them or feed them a too protein rich diet, they can grow to up to 70 pounds! You can pay to feed them, which is more than worth the money. I got to sit on the ground with him in my lap, as he gobbled up berries, kale, and oats from my hand.

IMG_3911 IMG_3873 IMG_3878 IMG_3889 IMG_3900 IMG_3915 IMG_3923 IMG_3931 IMG_3937

IMG_0234

I think the photo quality reflects just how wiggly he was!

On the way to the car, we stopped for a dole whip for my dad and iced lattes for my mom and me-plus some much needed time in air conditioning!

IMG_3942 IMG_3943 IMG_3946

My final stop in Lahaina was Enjoy the Ride-a spin studio! They had a big screen in front that displayed a real terrain which was cool. The class was fun but not the hardest I’ve ever taken-it was perfect for the vacation!

IMG_3948

Scenes form the drive back to Wailea/Kihei.

IMG_3949 IMG_3951

Dinner was at Three’s Bar and Grill. We started with a miso kale salad-I’ve had a couple of these while here and I’ve really loved them! For my entree, I had fish lau lau, which also included purple sweet potatoes and kale.

IMG_3952 IMG_3953

Dessert was gluten free lilikoi cheesecake. Gluten free cheesecake is something I’ve seen pop up on several menus around here!

IMG_3956

Saturday morning was another highlight. We began with a trip to Starbucks for a quick breakfast (I had a smoothie plus sliced pineapple from Starbucks!)

IMG_3961

On the agenda was the Grand Dairy Tour at the Surfing Goat Dairy. This tour allowed us to see the production process of the small, humane certified dairy. We got to feed the goat, milk the goats (!!!-so excited), herd the goats, and finally-taste all the cheese! I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

IMG_3962 IMG_3964 IMG_3969 IMG_3974 IMG_3975 IMG_3980 IMG_3986 IMG_3987 IMG_0052 IMG_0060 IMG_0068 IMG_0074 IMG_0082 IMG_3994 IMG_3995 IMG_4001 IMG_4004 IMG_4005 IMG_4007IMG_0101

Their cheeses were top of the line. We bought some to et during the rest of the trip, and are planning on ordering more online to send home! The blueberry and the lime goat cheese truffles I tried were delicious as well!

Next stop-higher upcountry for lunch and pineapple wine tasting!

IMG_4006

Lunch was at the ranch burger place across from the winery. I had a taro burger on a gluten free bun.

At the winery, we did the complimentary tasting where we got to choose 3 types of wine to try. I tried the sparking pineapple wine, the rose sparking, and the sweet raspberry dessert wine.

IMG_4008 IMG_4015

I was really torn about taking home a bottle of the sparkling pineapple or the sparkling rose. I liked the rose more, but the pineapple was really unique!

We took a complimentary tour-and I learned that they produce a really small amount of their award winning sparkling rose-it’s made with grapes grown on their property, and because they produce so little, they only sell their award winning rose on the property, so I felt good about my decision to get that! Scenes from the tour:

IMG_4018 IMG_4019 IMG_4014 IMG_4020 IMG_4021

The rest of the day included a decaf Kona cappuccino, exploring some shops in Wailea, goat cheese, and room service.

IMG_4023 IMG_4024 IMG_4025 IMG_4026 IMG_4027 IMG_4028

Um-check out this cheesecake. Lilikoi cheesecake with a gluten free brownie base. YUM.

So-can you tell I kind of like animals?

Preparations for Holiday Racing https://fitnessissweet.com/2014/11/14/preparations-for-holiday-racing/ https://fitnessissweet.com/2014/11/14/preparations-for-holiday-racing/#comments Fri, 14 Nov 2014 20:53:57 +0000 http://fitnessissweet.com/?p=18793 Read More]]> Happy Friday! We made it! Yay! I actually was able to get my big assignment finished last night, which is a huge load off my shoulders!

This is what I made:

IMG_0011

Luckily we didn’t have to do any graphics for this assignment, and I just had to work on game play. I have played enough Yahtzee now to last a lifetime.

Not going to lie, I like days better that include 3 straight meals. It seems simpler and more in order. Which is weird. Either way, yesterday was one of those days. My morning began with an hour of spin on my own, followed by breakfast.

IMG_0002

I think the pancake was whole wheat cinnamon? Plus the typical yogurt bowl.

Then I settled in to a coffeeshop to work on the above assignment.

IMG_0003

I had coffee Mon-Thurs this week and I think about half of those days it was unnecessary. This was way too strong and I was WIRED.

Lunch before lab was same old, same old. My last freezer meal :'(

IMG_0006

After lab, I really wanted to go to Crossfit because it was squat day, and we’re following a specific program, but my feet were bothering me and I had a lot of work so I skipped it.

IMG_0009

Dinner was a mix of a whole bunch of things-edamame, potstickers (chicken and veg), butternut squash, barley, and teriyaki chicken. For dessert, I had hot chocolate cake with fudge. With ice cream in a separate bowl so it wouldn’t melt.

IMG_0010

I’ve gotten into the bad habit of having dessert at the dining hall more often than not, so something to work on. This was delicious though.

And those were my 3 meals!

Now onto running talk.

I feel like I’m not at all in speed shape, unfortunately. I’m doing a Turkey Trot 10k, and it definitely will not be a PR. On the plus side, I have been running 6 miles a lot lately, so the distance should be fine. In mid-December, I’m doing the Santa Run 5k that I’ve done the past 2 years. Last year I tried to PR this race (spoiler alert-didn’t happen), but this year I know I’m not going to be close because that’s in a month! That being said, some speed work is definitely in order. I’ve been doing Friday morning track workouts, although not super consistently. This morning was 10x400m, and I feel like in the last few repeats I was starting to get in the groove of running faster. I think next week’s track workout will be longer and not as fast, in preparation for the 10k. In addition, I think for now I’m going to make Monday afternoons (I only have 2 more of these of normal classes though) treadmill runs. These will vary somewhat, although for next week I’m thinking I’ll do 2 miles @ 8:00 pace, plus 10 2:00 intervals at 7:30. I did a shorter version of this last Monday, and I think after that I’m ready to kick it up a notch! To be honest, my main PR goal races will be in the winter-probably the same ones I did last year! So I have plenty of time. Right now, my running isn’t super focused, which I’m enjoying, but some speed workouts will be good for me!

What are your upcoming goals?

WIAW- Hawaii Edition https://fitnessissweet.com/2013/09/03/wiaw-hawaii-edition/ https://fitnessissweet.com/2013/09/03/wiaw-hawaii-edition/#comments Tue, 03 Sep 2013 21:44:08 +0000 http://fitnessissweet.com/?p=10125 Read More]]> Hello from Maui! I have a lot of FABULOUS guest posters this weekend. Did you catch Holly‘s post yesterday? I wanted to pop in to say hi for What I Ate Wednesday…on a Tuesday. Just go with it, ok? Thanks as always to Jenn.Image

I’ve been in Maui for almost 4 days now. It’s not all just beaches and palm trees-there’s lots of goof food too! It’s hard, I know.

ImageImageThis edition of What I Ate Wednesday will focus on all my eats here on vacation.

I know I already discussed this, but my dad is a big fan of authentic Hawaiian food. He loved kalua pig and lau lau-pig wrapped in ti leaves. Since I’m not a pork eater (those pigs are too darn cute!), I used to always order the Loco Moco, which is a beef burger, rice, a fried egg, and gravy. These days I stay away from red meat, so I ordered the teriyaki chicken.

ImageThe first night, we went to a Luau, with more traditional (ish) Hawaiian food. It was a buffet. Enough said.

ImageRice, various veggies, purple sweet potato, teriyaki chicken, macadamia encrusted mahi mahi, a roll and poi (made from taro).

And of course dessert. I had to try a little of everything.

ImageThe highlight was probably the guava mousse. Yum!

Since I don’t normally eat out quite this much and restaurant portions are usually large, my mom and I have been making an effort to share meals during this trip. Before going zip lining (!), we stopped in at a local hole in the wall sandwich shop.

ImageThe walls were lined with dollar bills which people (probably mostly tourists) left with a message. How quirky!

My mom and I split a turkey sandwich with island avocado. ImageAnd after zip lining, I had some pineapple ice cream.

ImageYesterday was a day with a ton of good eats. My sister and her boyfriend are training for a marathon, and yesterday they ran 16 miles. They were kind of ravenous afterwards, so we went somewhere near the run, and appetizers were in order. Nachos with guac? SIgn me up!

ImageFor the main course, I split the turkey flatbread with my mom. They even served it up on separate plates- a nice touch!

ImageFor dessert, the table shared a slice of hula pie- vanilla macadamia nut ice cream on a Oreo crust, topped with hot and cold fudge.

ImageDinner last night was also a highlight-we went to a nice dinner at Tommy Bahama since my sister’s boyfriend has to leave today. I ordered Jerk Chicken with mango salsa, Asian slaw, and almond rice. Everything was delicious.

ImageAaaand some fancy desserts were shared afterwards.

ImageClockwise from the top left- pineapple creme brulee, butterscotch pudding, 4 layer chocolate cake, and key lime pie.

A few unpictured but other things I’ve enjoyed so far- tropical fruits (mango, papaya, passion fruit) and chocolate covered macadamia nuts. Caramacs=the bomb. They’re caramel, macadamia nut, and chocolate. Yum.

As I’m sure you can tell, a lot of delicious and decadent food was eaten. This morning however, I’m suffering a bit of a sugar hangover and stomachache. I think I need to reign it in a little to survive the rest of this vacation with a smile on my face!

As always, I love talking to you guys! I won’t pop in again for a while, but I have some AWESOME guest posts scheduled so check back in for those!

What do you eat while on vacation? How do you stay healthy?
