Father’s Day; Let’s Talk Beer

Father’s Day weekend seems like a pretty appropriate time to discuss beer, right?

Friday night, we pulled out one of our big cans of passionfruit beer from Hawaii to share.

IMG_4087IMG_4088

They were from March but still pretty good!

Saturday morning I had work, so I did a little full day of eating for you all!

Breakfast:

IMG_4090

A chocolate banana smoothie with frozen banana, milk, cocoa, and Quest chocolate protein plus sunbutter of GF cinnamon raisin toast.

Lunch:

IMG_4091

I have this lunch so frequently. Salad with nectarine, grilled chicken, and goat cheese, and a side of GF cheddar crackers.

Snack:

IMG_4092

Dinner:

My parents met me with Chloe for an outdoor dinner downtown by work.

I started off with a Budweiser.

IMG_4097

I don’t think I’ve ever actually had Budweiser outside of St. Louis. I actually liked it there!

…but I don’t think the Budweiser you get there is the same as you get here. This was way more watery. Definitely not as good. Upon analysis, this wasn’t even close to the same color. The beer in STL is much more amber:

IMG_0637

Yeah. What the heck?

….and back to the food.

We got roasted brussels sprouts and sweet potato fries for the table.

IMG_4098 IMG_4099

For my meal, I had a beet and goat cheese salad with TRUFFLE honey. OMG <3

IMG_4100

We stopped for froyo after. Chocolate+bananas flambé.

IMG_4101

A little bit later in the night, I grabbed a dulce de leche cupcake with chocolate frosting from the freezer. The freezer went through some freezing/thawing issues so my cow looked a little bit sadder!

IMG_4103

NOW, for Father’s Day!

We started out with a run for me and a walk for pups by the bay before it got hot. Spoiler alert: it got HOT later. It was over 100 at my house, which almost never happens!

IMG_4105

For our main Father’s Day event, we all went to Dan Gordon’s, the restaurant associated with Gordon Biersch. Fun fact: my dad actually coached Dan Gordon’s daughter many years ago!

IMG_4108 19149197_1500172763366834_7815558931138017684_n

I had never actually had Gordon Biersch beer before! We decided to get a flight to try a few different things.

IMG_4109

I ended up deciding on the Hefeweizen. It was really interesting; it had more complex flavors (fruity?) than most wheat beers.

IMG_4111

Naturally, we got the famous Gordon Biersch garlic fries to start (found at AT&T park!).

IMG_4112

And roasted brussels sprouts. (SO good.)

IMG_4113

For my meal, I went in the brunch direction and got a goat cheese and portabello scramble, although I have to admit, I didn’t make a dent in it after garlic fries!

IMG_4114

After lunch, we braved the 100+ temperatures to walk to a nearby diner for ice cream. I had to rally my dessert stomach hard, but the peppermint fudge could not be passed up.

IMG_4115

When we got home, we let Chloe out of her crate (inside, in the AC), and apparently the house was so well conditioned that she went out into 100+ degrees and plopped down flat in the sun (she looked up when I took the pic.)

IMG_4116

….dogs.

Sunday afternoon’s task was bottling my home brewed beer! That called for a mini toast.

IMG_4118

I think the bottling went well! The beer isn’t fizzy yet, but I tasted what we had so far and it was pretty good! Now we wait two weeks, and then it will be time to test out the final product! Again, I’ll do a full recap on the process at that time.

IMG_4120

And that was Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day to my wonderful father (who will definitely read this <3 ); I wouldn’t be where I am today without you!

Pupcakes and Summer Salads

Hello! Today is my day off, and I am wiped out! I’ve been laying pretty low most of the day, but am enjoying the (finally) warm weather! I ventured outside to take the pup for a long walk, as well as for coffee with my sister.

IMG_4082 IMG_4085

^Flat dog=sign that I did my job and tired her out!

I have a couple of meal ideas for you guys today focusing on fresh produce! But to start, we’re going to back it up.

Tuesday:

Pre-workout cheerios. (Still in the habit of recording a full week of eating…it lasted 1 day.)

IMG_4056

Post-Crossfit I was craving protein so I aborted my planned breakfast and went with it. Probably thanks to death by double unders (essentially) the night before.

IMG_4057

I have a very lengthy list of immunization requirements for vet school, so I went to the doctor Tuesday to get all that taken care of. By the time I was done, and plenty of blood was drawn, I was STARVING. I met my mom for lunch at the nearby Neiman Marcus cafe. It’s pretty fancy, and they serve little appetizers. The first was chicken stock, and I swear after getting blood drawn and waiting so long of lunch, this gave me life!

IMG_4058

Next, they brought popovers with strawberry butter. I had a few bites only because I didn’t want to be asleep within the hour.

IMG_4059

For my meal, I got a salad with chicken, apple, dried fruit, and blue cheese.

IMG_4060

And with our check, they brought little chocolate peppermint sticks.

IMG_4061

My mom and I spent the afternoon looking for clothes for vet school. For classes, we don’t have a dress code, but I need some things that are a step up from leggings, as well as some more business casual for shadowing clinics. I found a few things, but I really need to work on building up my wardrobe!

For snack, we stopped at Pressed Juicery where I picked up a carroty juice, which I had with a sea salt chocolate protein bar.

IMG_4062

I was supposed to have a slow pitch softball game that evening in that area, but it ended up getting cancelled at the last minute because we didn’t have enough players. Instead, we picked up some things to make dinner.

IMG_4063

For dinner, we had a variation of my nectarine and date salad: nectarines, dates, rotisserie chicken, goat cheese, champagne vinaigrette. On the side, we picked up some random GF cheese breads. One of better than the other.

We recently got a Costco box of nectarines, which is why they have/will be featured so prominently this week!

For dessert, we picked up some Sprinkles cupcakes. I got a GF red velvet.

IMG_4064

Since I’m both a sucker for marketing and love my dog, when we saw puppy cakes, we had to pick one up for Chloe. They had simple ingredients, and are dipped in yogurt instead of frosted.

IMG_4066

She was actually really funny; she didn’t know what to think of it or how to eat it at first!

IMG_4069 IMG_4070

But of course she was motivated enough to figure it out!

Other evening snacks included Pirate’s Booty and a rice cake with chive and berry whipped cream cheese.

IMG_4065 IMG_4071

New on the fitness front is I’m planning on doing a new squat program. I did it when I worked with my trainer a couple of years ago, and think it would be a good way to build extra strength on my own. I’m starting at 10# lighter than last time though since I don’t think i’m as strong! Day 1 was 10-10-8 reps at 135-145-155. I was feeling it by the end of the day!

And now, more meals featuring fresh fruit and veggies. This is so much the time of year for it!

Breakfasts:

IMG_4074

One massive banana pancake, because making a bunch of little ones is a ton of work. 1 banana, 1 egg, half a serving of liquid egg whites, and baking powder. I also had half a Hawaiian papaya. My favorite papayas to get are the ones that are discounted due to overripe/bruising. Papayas can be expensive and take forever to ripen, and these are always perfectly ripe and ready to go, minus a spot or two.

IMG_4076

I went straight from spin to work, so I ate my lunch in the car. Maple blueberry bread and a nectarine.

Lunches/Dinners:

IMG_4075

Roasted veggie bowl. Rainbow carrots from our CSA, roasted broccoli, brown rice, a fried egg, hummus, and chives.

IMG_4078

My grilled peach and chicken salad, but with nectarines.

IMG_4084

And lastly, salad with leftover grilled chicken, papaya, parmesan, and champagne vinaigrette.

That’s all i have for ya, go out and enjoy the summer weather+food!

Let’s Talk About Last Week

So, as you probably noticed around here, I did a full week of eating last week! There were a couple of reasons I wanted to do this. This post will talk a little bit more about that. But I figured, why not recap my full week of eating with another full day of eating? Especially since summer is here, all the vibrant, colorful foods are in season!

For breakfast, I pulled out some buzzfeed lemon poppyseed bread from the freezer and was reminded of how delicious it is! On the side, I had the last of our cherries and an apricot.

IMG_4045

Yesterday ended up being a really active day for me. I went to a short interval based spin class in the morning, and then came home and immediately took Chloe for a walk (I’m the only one who can do it right now, and she really needs the exercise.)

IMG_4046

We got back right around lunchtime, and I made my current favorite sandwich: GF bread, garlic and herb laughing cow, lettuce, turkey, avocado, and garlic powder. Garlic powder is key. On the side, I had some watermelon.

IMG_4047

For dessert, I tried a new protein bar that my mom found at costco. It’s salted caramel chocolate.

IMG_4048

This was actually really good. Great taste, and it comes in a half bar size which is kind of fun, and sometimes exactly what I want.

My afternoon snack was a Nugo mint chocolate bar. Again, these taste like a chocolate bar.

IMG_4049

Yesterday, I found that today I have a slow-pitch softball game. Cue slight panic. I realized I hadn’t touched a softball in 2 years. How is that even possible? The past year totally flew by. I missed last season thanks to a broken foot, but I thought I’d have a little more time to prepare! I spent some time yesterday afternoon throwing the ball around with my sister, and taking a few swings. Thankfully, it seems like muscle memory is strong. I guess when you do a motion few million times, it tends to stick with you! Today will be the true test though! It was interesting through; I’m definitely fitter than I was 2 years ago, which translated into my game a little different than I was expecting. I felt quicker and more agile, but I also felt less like I was going to pull something. I kind of expected the first throws to feel like my arms was ripping out of the socket, but throwing felt really good!

That evening, I went to Crossfit. I really need to take a better look at the workouts beforehand to know what to expect, because this one was a doozy. I guess I sort of glance at the movements without actually looking at the rep scheme and how long it will actually take. We did heavy back squats first, and then this joy of a WOD:

3 rounds

50 calorie row

150 double unders

50 walking lunges

My double unders are in the twilight zone; they’re good enough that I really shouldn’t scale to singles in a workout, but they’re bad enough that they can take for.ever. if they’re not on that day. I decided if I wasn’t averaging sets of 10 at least, I would switch to singles. I did all doubles….and this workout took me just over 30 minutes. It was LOTS of cardio, and I was tired, sweaty, and super thirsty when I got home! While I waited for dinner, I chugged water and pulled out the watermelon.

IMG_4051

For dinner, we had Brazilian cheese bread and one of our all time favorite soups: leftover roast chicken with roasted vegetables.

IMG_4052

After dinner, I had a few bites of ice cream while I threw together another batch of my maple blueberry bread.

IMG_4053

Of course, I had to have a slice of that when it came out.

IMG_4054

For my nighttime snack, I had a rice cake with chive whipped cream cheese. And then half a glass of champagne when the Warriors won!

IMG_4055

Ok. Now, let’s talk about the full week of eating a little bit. The goal for the week was to dial in my nutrition, be consistent, make some progress, but also enjoy life. If you look back at the posts from this past week, every day is different. There’s plenty of protein and veggie rich meals, but I was still easily able to fit in ice cream sundaes, doughnuts, and beer into my diet. It really is all about balance. It’s about choices. For example, on Sunday, I went to a baseball game so I enjoyed beer and an ice cream sundae, but for lunch I split a flatbread and a salad, and then had a lighter dinner. You can make the choice to be healthy sometimes, and not so healthy others, and this balance is in itself healthy. I actually ate the same amount of calories each day this week, and what I filled those calories with each day varied a ton! By setting a calorie number each day, I forced myself to be more creative and to fuel my body with better things. Right around Thursday or Friday last year, I felt like a rockstar! It’s amazing what protein and produce do for your body. I wasn’t nearly as energized after beer and ice cream sundaes, but that was a sacrifice I was happy to make. This week was a fun way to experiment with what works for me, but it was also to show you that you can still make progress with fun foods in there as well. I went out to eat some, I cooked myself some. But I made it all work. And I’m pretty sure I ate ice cream every single day.

I also love how colorful my meals were this past week. Again, that summer produce!

I hope you enjoyed this past week of posts. It was a lot of fun to write, but I don’t think I’m going to continue to do full days of eating, every day. Especially on work days, I’m often just ready to SLEEP at the end of the day. I will try to incorporate more full days of eating because I think it gives a more complete picture, and I personally love reading them!

What are your food philosophies?

Full Week of Eating Day 7: Visiting a Pup

Guys. I am so freaking tired. It’s Sunday night as I type this up, and I’ve been worn out since I woke up. The curse of being an early riser is I wake up at 5:30 on my days off, tired but not sleepy. I am beyond ready for bed, so we’re not going to get too verbose for the last day of my full week of eating! Tomorrow I’ll write a little more about the week and the point behind all of it. It was fun for me to do, and I hope you enjoyed reading it!

Breakfast: I ate this at 6am since I knew I wanted to run sometime in the morning, and we wanted to take Chloe to the vet mid-morning, so I decided to get the day started early. I had a Luna bar and some cherries.

IMG_4019

I fit in a 3 mile hilly run with just enough time to shower before taking Chloe to the vet. I just can’t stay away, even on my days off! We were concerned she has a urinary tract infection, which our vet thinks is likely.

We finished at the vet in perfect time to head up to San Francisco for the Giants game! My mom and I stopped at Anchor Brewing at The Yard (right outside the ballpark) for beers before the game. I had a mango wheat, and my mom had a barley wine beer, which I had a few sips of.

IMG_4020

For lunch, we split a cauliflower truffle flatbread (GF) and a beet salad. 1. I love this ballpark and its food and 2. the flatbread is absolutely amazing.

IMG_4022

^my half

IMG_4023 IMG_4024

For dessert, we split a Ghiradelli hot fudge sundae.

IMG_4025

It actually ended up being dog day at the ballpark, which we were totally unaware of until we saw everyone with dogs! One year we’ll need to bring Chloe!

IMG_4026

How was the game? Windy. Slow. Exciting. Nerve Wracking.

30 mph winds. We were getting absolutely blown to death and my hat almost took a dip in McCovey cove with a few gusts there. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced wind that strong. Walking was a struggle.

The game was pretty long for a 9 inning game, and there wasn’t a lot going on early on for us.

We broke it open and scored 9 runs during the 7th and 8th inning.

…And then came scarily close to blowing it all in the 9th.

Sounds about right for a Giants game these days.

Dinner: I wanted something lighter post-sundae, so I made a salad with deli turkey, some kind of fancy merlot cheese, salt and pepper, oil and vinegar. Baked Cheddar and Sour Cream Lays on the side. <-so good.

IMG_4028

The sundae however did not preclude ice cream for dessert from happening. Sea salt caramel Halo Top with half a piece of chocolate chip pumpkin bread.

IMG_4029

After dinner, I met my friend’s 8 week old Norwegian Buhund, and he is a BABE. Such a cutie.

IMG_4030 IMG_4031 IMG_4033 IMG_4036 IMG_4040 IMG_4042

Finally, my last snack of the day was half a brown rice cake with whipped berry cream cheese.

IMG_4043

…and now it is most definitely bedtime for me. #grandmalife

Full Week of Eating Day 6: Celebrating Saturday

I’m going to dive right into today’s post because it’s just about bedtime for me, and I didn’t get anything up any sooner! Today was a work day for me, so let’s hop to it!

Breakfast: A slight modification from my go-to smoothie bowl, which made it taste the same but look not quite as pretty and bright in color. I made my smoothie with plain Greek yogurt, mango juice, frozen pineapple, frozen cherries, and frozen blueberries, and topped it with KIND maple granola. I had a serving of egg whites on the side for added protein.

IMG_4006

Lunch: salad with rotisserie chicken, chopped apple, aged cheddar, and light champagne vinaigrette. On the side, GF crackers and a ginger chew.

IMG_4002

Mid-work snack: Chocolate Banana NuGo bar.

IMG_4003

Happy hour/puppy hour: after work, my parents and I took Chloe to a dog-friend bar for some brews. I had the Free Kittens, a rice lager. I partly like the taste, and partly like the name.

IMG_4014

Dinner: Since we were already downtown, we walked a couple of blocks over to a Mexican restaurant. There’s another Mexican place nearby that we had been to before, but this new (to us) one I liked a lot better! Much more flavor. We started with chips and salsa.

IMG_4015

And I had the taco salad (sans shell). Basically everything you would find in a taco: chicken, black beans, pico, lettuce, corn, and cojita cheese. Plus some of my parents’ rice.

IMG_4016

Dessert: The last of my mint and chocolate Halo Tops with fudge sauce and whipped cream, and later a few chocolate covered blueberries.

IMG_4017 IMG_4018

And now I’m off to bed!
