I have definitely broken my 5th metatarsal last year, and let me just say that it’s really not fun. I really, really hope that it’s not a stress fracture. If you do have a fracture, you may notice that you start subconsciously shifting your weight to the other side of the body to compensate, and that the troublesome area is painful while running but fine at rest. The spot may be tender to touch as well, depending on how broken it is. Unfortunately, metatarsal fractures are pretty common for runners.

If your bone is broken, you’re stuck in a boot for a while. Hopefully your fracture is near the base of the metatarsal or some other area with good circulation; mine was an avulsion fracture at the base, and I was up and walking in about 5 weeks witout a boot. I cross-trained like all heck throughout the entire period I was non-weight-bearing in the pool or on a Spin bike. Once I was able to bear weight, I did the elliptical, Stairmaster, and all the physical therapy exercises I was supposed to do. I was cleared to run 2 miles the week before Thanksgiving, which is quite generous considering I hadn’t been running for about 2 months! I ramped up my mileage to about 5 miles every other day over the course of 4 weeks, and then I got the clearance to run 20-25 miles per week for a month before building up to 30.

I hope this helps!
